We are seeking a seasoned psychiatric consultant to guide our team on a long-term contractual basis, with flexibility in duration. This position calls for a proactive and motivating leader who can cultivate a professional and transparent environment that empowers our clinical personnel to deliver outstanding, empathetic care.

Key Responsibilities

As the Senior Psychiatric Consultant, you will be a prominent and impactful presence within our facility. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary management team, ensuring that our services adhere to the highest regulatory standards. Your leadership will be crucial in defining the strategic vision of our unit, consistently prioritizing safe, effective, and personalized care for each patient.

About Our Organization

Our facility is a specialized psychiatric hospital that offers tailored services for adults. We operate multiple wards, including those focused on intensive care and acute needs.

Our intensive care services cater to women experiencing severe mental health crises, requiring swift assessment and stabilization.

Our acute wards provide short-term hospitalization for older adults, typically those aged 55 and above, allowing us to stabilize their mental health. The average duration of stay in our acute wards is less than forty days.

Core Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with clinical colleagues and management to develop a comprehensive treatment service that aims to deliver high-quality responses to individuals facing various mental health challenges, grounded in evidence-based practices.
  2. Assume overall responsibility for a defined caseload of patients, providing expert advice regarding their psychiatric care.
  3. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders.
  4. Supervise the performance of other psychiatric consultants, ensuring systems are in place for appraisal and revalidation, while addressing any concerns regarding conduct or performance.
  5. Provide effective leadership alongside other psychiatric consultants, offering clinical supervision and mentorship.
  6. Collaborate with the Responsible Officer to support the appraisal and revalidation processes for fellow psychiatrists.
  7. Represent the organization externally, enhancing its profile and establishing connections with commissioners and community teams.
  8. Participate in an on-call rota with other psychiatric consultants.
  9. Ensure adequate consultant coverage across the facility as necessary.
  10. Engage in quality enhancement and service evaluation initiatives, and pursue relevant research opportunities for service improvement.
  11. Participate in educational and health promotion activities within the mental health service, maintaining regular communication with general practitioners.
  12. Lead the continuing professional development program for the facility, fostering a culture of learning.
  13. Provide insights and guidance on relevant initiatives requiring a medical perspective, such as the implementation of recommendations from national inquiries and investigations.
Qualifications
  1. Approved Clinician status.
  2. Membership in the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and maintaining good standing in continuing professional development.
  3. Current registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
Experience
  1. A minimum of five years of experience in an inpatient setting.
  2. Experience working in acute psychiatric services.
  3. Ability to make independent clinical decisions and demonstrate clinical leadership.
  4. Knowledge of evidence-based practices.
  5. Evidence of participation in clinical audits.
  6. In-depth understanding of mental health legislation.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Up-to-date knowledge of current practices in inpatient psychiatry.
  9. Ability to organize and prioritize clinical needs effectively.
  10. Experience in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit is preferred.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, necessitating a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
