JOB SUMMARY

The Fleet Training & Technical Manager will work in close partnership with the Head of Fleet Operations to design and execute the training framework for Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. This marine expert will focus on organizational growth and professional advancement, overseeing all fleet training initiatives, ensuring adherence to the Port of London Authorities Continuous Personal Development (CPD) points system for our Masters, and creating a structured training pathway for crew members to excel in their positions. By identifying and applying innovative and improved operational methods, the Fleet Training & Technical Manager will play a vital role in establishing Uber Boat by Thames Clippers as 'The most loved transport in London and the obvious choice.' This position is crucial for achieving business objectives through the development of a strong talent pipeline.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Marine professional holding a Boat Master License or equivalent Certificate of Competency.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in a leadership role aboard a passenger vessel, and/or experience in a Marine Manager capacity.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and develop a team of Managers and trainers.
  • Experience in formulating and executing training strategies.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching marine curriculum with the capability to deliver training on the Boat Master Syllabus.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate team members to achieve peak performance.
  • Competence in identifying areas for improvement and effectively communicating these to higher management.
  • Capacity to respond promptly and adopt a hands-on approach.
  • Composed demeanor with the ability to perform under pressure.
  • Proficient in analyzing, interpreting, and converting data into actionable and strategic decisions.
  • Adept at proactive planning, task management, delegation, and meeting deadlines.
  • Experienced in budget management and forecasting.
  • Familiarity with MCA regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Capable of delivering ISM training.

Desirable

  • Endorsement for Port of London River Thames Local Knowledge and Passenger Operations specialist.
  • Knowledge of Public Transport Systems.
  • Experience in Project Management.
  • Understanding of the High Speed Craft Code.
  • Experience in Passenger Ferry or High-Speed operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, manage, and support a team of Training Officers and Type-rating Instructors, ensuring they possess the knowledge and resources to succeed in their roles while remaining focused on business success.
  • Execute UBTC's Fleet Training Strategy by establishing clear objectives and actions, assigning responsibilities, and managing timelines.
  • Identify and implement innovative training techniques to enhance the knowledge and skills of our crew, ensuring UBTC remains an industry leader, compliant with all international and UK regulations, and continues to provide a world-class service.
  • Collaborate with operational managers, trainers, the business scheduling team, and fleet controllers to deliver training programs for all levels.
  • Maintain and enhance the training matrix for all operational personnel, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, certification maintenance, identification of training needs, and timely delivery of training solutions.
  • Ensure the delivery of mandatory training programs, including but not limited to STCW, ISM, the High Speed Craft code, Boatmasters Licence (BML) training, and Bridge Resource Management training.
  • Develop and implement engaging training content and materials, with a strong emphasis on e-learning and the advancement of our Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Establish productive and mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders, both internally (Heads of Departments) and externally (contractors, local regulatory authorities, and educational institutions).
  • Promote and uphold UBTC values, ensuring employees feel supported and empowered in their roles and confident to engage professionally at all levels.
  • Assist the Head of Fleet Operations with projects and business cases, taking the lead as necessary and ensuring appropriate resources are allocated for project delivery.
  • Compile management information for strategic workforce planning and balance scorecard meetings.
  • Work with the Head of Fleet Operations to develop action plans aimed at enhancing results.
  • Create type-rating training guidance notes and type rating manuals for all vessels in the fleet across all ranks.
  • Enhance our drills training offerings to ensure crew readiness for all emergencies.
  • Monitor and manage the operational training budget for the Fleet Operations team.
  • Keep relevant budget holders informed to ensure adequate provisions are made for training.
  • Ensure compliance with HR legislation and training best practices in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • In collaboration with operational managers and the Head of Fleet Operations, develop a strategic workforce plan to ensure sufficient resources are available for training.
  • Maintain all training-related records.
  • Identify new training suppliers and manage ongoing relationships, ensuring all required external training is conducted efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Support operational managers in the selection process for new team members working afloat and in the progression and development of staff into higher ranks.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of customer service training to enhance the overall customer experience.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices as mandated by current legislation and the Company's Health and Safety Policy.
  • Ensure that all relevant information is communicated promptly and accurately in a manner that is easily understood.
