Position Details
About the Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to join the MMO as we transition into an independent coastal authority, enhancing our responsibilities and services aimed at protecting marine environments. The Marine Officer position is diverse and crucial to the MMO's mission.
You will receive training and accreditation to become a marine assurance expert while developing strong partnerships with various stakeholders. Utilizing a risk-based methodology, you will play a vital role in ensuring compliance with marine regulations.
This position offers a wide range of responsibilities, including inspecting fishing vessels upon landing, assessing compliance of marine projects, advising marine industry stakeholders, and contributing to intelligence efforts. You will engage with the local coastline and work from our offices to ensure that marine activities adhere to established rules and regulations. Building relationships across marine sectors, you will represent the MMO effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of fishing vessels in port and, when necessary, at sea.
- Provide guidance to the fishing sector to enhance compliance.
- Represent the MMO in meetings concerning fishing and marine activities with relevant stakeholders.
- Identify and address violations of marine regulations.
- Perform desk-based monitoring of fishing activities, including the transportation and sale of fish.
- Supply intelligence to inform on potential risks to the marine environment.
- When violations are identified, initiate evidence collection to a high standard.
- Oversee and inspect activities licensed under the Marine and Coastal Act 2009.
- Offer local insights to central MMO teams regarding the impact of activities on the marine environment.
- Conduct site visits to monitor licensed marine activities and detect violations.
- Monitor activities within local Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
- Contribute to the monitoring of pollution incidents.
- Gather evidence following the detection of violations.
- Assist in the investigative process, including interviewing suspects.
- Support the Investigations Team in advancing investigations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
