Job Overview

This role is situated within the Marine Management Organisation, focusing on the South East region.

Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the MMO during a transformative period as we establish ourselves as an independent coastal authority. The Marine Officer position is integral to our mission of protecting and enhancing the marine ecosystem.

As a Marine Officer, you will receive training and accreditation to become a marine assurance expert, building strong partnerships with our delivery collaborators. Utilizing a risk-based methodology, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with marine activities.

This position offers a diverse range of responsibilities, including:

  • Conducting inspections of fishing vessels both in port and at sea.
  • Providing guidance to the fishing sector to improve compliance standards.
  • Representing the MMO in discussions with stakeholders regarding fishing and marine activities.
  • Identifying and addressing violations of marine regulations.
  • Monitoring fishing activities through desk-based assessments, including transportation and sales.
  • Gathering intelligence to assess risks to the marine environment.
  • Collecting evidence in cases of detected violations.
  • Overseeing works licensed under the Marine and Coastal Act 2009.
  • Advising central MMO teams on local marine activity impacts.
  • Conducting site visits to inspect licensed marine activities and identify violations.
  • Monitoring activities within local Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
  • Participating in pollution event assessments.
  • Assisting in evidence collection for investigations.
  • Supporting the Investigations Team in advancing cases.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage workload and meet deadlines.

  • Physical capability to perform duties in challenging environments, including boarding vessels and inspecting cargo.

Desirable

  • Experience in marine operations and relevant legislation.
  • A qualification related to marine studies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
