Ramsgate, Kent, United Kingdom SE Trains Ltd Full time

Job Overview

The Mainline Fleet Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing and guiding a dedicated team of Fleet Engineers focused on the continuous enhancement of Southeastern's rolling stock. This role involves spearheading the identification, development, and execution of various fleet improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, reliability, passenger satisfaction, profitability, and environmental sustainability. Typically, these enhancements are realized through process optimization, specification adjustments, or modifications to components and systems.

The team also offers essential technical support for projects critical to business operations. This includes collaborating with the Major Programmes team from the initial specification stage through design, development, approval, and implementation.

This position ensures that the team is aligned with the business objectives and commitments outlined in the Business Plan. It is essential to provide clear reporting on initiatives, adhere to deadlines, and manage any changes through the Engineering Change process. Regular updates on team progress and the status of Engineering Changes will be communicated to the business.

Additionally, the Fleet Operations Manager, alongside the Fleet Engineers, will explore external opportunities for improvement, innovation, and best practices that can benefit Southeastern. This will involve representing the company at industry working groups and examining applicable practices from other sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the portfolio of development initiatives for the Mainline fleet, ensuring proper prioritization and timely completion of all workstreams.
  • Oversee Engineering Changes through the Engineering Change tracker, chairing regular meetings to ensure critical changes are advanced within agreed timelines.
  • Address outstanding actions and concerns raised by Engineering Changes, ensuring they are resolved within acceptable timeframes.
  • Lead or participate in regular meetings focused on fleet development, representing Southeastern at relevant RoSCo and Supplier meetings as necessary.
  • Act as a Competent Person, approving Engineering Changes as part of Southeastern's Safety Management System (SMS).

Ideal Candidate Profile

To be considered for this position, candidates should demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in an engineering environment.
  • A degree or HND/HNC in an Engineering Discipline.
  • Familiarity with reliability growth models and techniques, with practical experience in a technical or operational setting. Skills in structured problem-solving using recognized processes such as FMEA, RCM, RAMS, or FRACAS are particularly valuable.
  • Desirable technical knowledge of Traction and Rolling Stock systems and operations, along with an understanding of maintenance management and documentation.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in project management, particularly in structured time management, resource identification, and prioritization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Practical knowledge of IT systems, including Windows, Word, Excel, and MS Project or equivalent.
  • Good understanding of Railway Group Standards, ROGS, and other relevant rail-related standards, including Interoperability (RIR) and Technical Standards for Interoperability.
  • Familiarity with the Network Rail operational rule book, particularly as it pertains to DC EMU rolling stock.
  • The ability to obtain Personal Track Safety Certification.

As a proud supporter of the Armed Forces Covenant and Disability Confident Scheme, we are committed to providing opportunities for all candidates who meet the minimum criteria for the role.

  • This position may close early if a significant number of applications are received.
  • All employment offers are contingent upon satisfactory references, verification of the right to work, a basic criminal record check, and a pre-employment medical assessment. Work visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
  • If you have previously applied but were not successful in securing a similar position, please wait six months before reapplying.
