Job Overview

The Mainline Fleet Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing and directing a team of Fleet Engineers dedicated to the enhancement and continuous development of Southeastern's rolling stock. This team plays a crucial role in identifying, developing, and executing various fleet improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, reliability, passenger satisfaction, profitability, and environmental sustainability. Improvements are typically realized through process enhancements, specification updates, or modifications to components and systems.

The team also offers technical assistance for projects critical to business operations. They support the Major Programmes team from the initial specification phase through design, development, approval, and implementation stages.

This role ensures that the team is aligned with the business objectives and commitments outlined in the Business Plan. It is essential that all initiatives are reported clearly, deadlines are adhered to, and any changes are processed through the Engineering Change protocol. The role includes reporting on team progress and the status of Engineering Changes to the business.

Additionally, the Mainline Fleet Operations Manager, along with the Fleet Engineers, will explore external avenues for improvement opportunities, innovations, and best practices that can benefit Southeastern. This involves representing the company at industry working groups and seeking insights from other relevant sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the Mainline fleet portfolio of development initiatives, ensuring proper prioritization of workstreams and adherence to deadlines. Oversee Engineering Changes through the Engineering Change tracker, chairing regular meetings to ensure critical changes are advanced within agreed timelines. Manage outstanding actions and caveats arising from Engineering Changes, ensuring timely resolution. Lead or participate in regular meetings focused on fleet development, including representation at RoSCo and Supplier meetings as necessary. Serve as a Competent Person, approving Engineering Changes as part of Southeastern's Safety Management System (SMS).

Ideal Candidate Profile

Candidates should demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:

Minimum of 4 years in an engineering environment. Degree or HND/HNC in an Engineering Discipline. Familiarity with reliability growth models and techniques, with practical experience in a technical or operational setting. Skills in structured problem-solving using recognized processes such as FMEA, RCM, RAMS, or FRACAS are particularly valuable. Technical knowledge of Traction and Rolling Stock systems and operations is desirable, along with an understanding of maintenance management and documentation. Proven leadership and management capabilities, with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in project management, particularly in structured time management, resource allocation, and prioritization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Practical knowledge of IT systems, including Windows, Word, Excel, and MS Project or equivalent. Good understanding of Railway Group Standards, ROGS, and other relevant rail-related standards, including Interoperability (RIR) and Technical Standards for Interoperability. Familiarity with the Network Rail operational rule book, particularly as it pertains to DC EMU rolling stock. Ability to obtain Personal Track Safety Certification.
