About the Role

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced leader to join our senior team as Matron for Theatres. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for providing professional leadership and management to our theatre staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care and theatre services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance, support, and professional leadership to all staff within the theatre environment.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Initiate, implement, and evaluate quality control methods as appropriate to the theatre department.
  • Manage Control of Infection in Theatres with support from the Infection Prevention and Control Team.
  • Ensure all staff within the Theatre departments are aware of their responsibility in the prevention and control of infection.
  • Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical nursing practice which remains updated according to evidence.
  • Ensure that care is planned and developed in a systematic way, in accordance with the agreed model of care.
  • Support with the investigation and monitoring of complaints and PALs enquiries, within the department.
Operational Management
  • Effectively manage the Units budget for consumables and staff to ensure that the unit works within the financial framework.
  • Provide accurate written reports to the Head of Nursing, Chief Nurse, and other senior divisional managers when required.
  • Co-ordinate the units resources to ensure effective and full utilisation of funded resources and efficient delivery of the service.
  • Assist the triumvirate to develop a quality strategy for the Theatre areas in line with the Trust's strategic objectives.
  • Manage recruitment, retention, and development of theatre staff within each of the areas in collaboration with the education team.
  • Explore and develop roles within the theatre in line with service needs and financial envelope.
  • Work in line with and develop integrated care policies.
  • Ensure that all staff have regular appraisals (PDR) and up-to-date development plans.
  • Encourage and manage performance through the appraisal process.
  • Delegate work effectively, setting clear parameters of responsibility.
  • Work in line with the Matron's Handbook.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation on both patient and staff records.
  • Provide effective management and leadership to all staff in all areas.
  • Take responsibility for risk management and clinical governance within all areas under sphere of responsibility.
  • Responsible for reporting instances where clinical targets may not be met in order to devise action plans and provide written reports when required.
  • Responsible for ensuring Workforce Key Performance Indicators for Theatre non-medical staff meet Trust targets and action plans are in place if required.
  • Responsible for overviewing the management of the preparation/maintenance of duty rotas, on Health roster, carried out by the Clinical Lead Specialists.
  • Ensure staff complete relevant trust training/competencies on commencing post and keeping up to date as necessary.
  • Utilise project and change management skills in order to streamline efficiency within the department as required.
  • Undertake skill mix reviews and ensure appropriate utilisation of staff within the department.
  • Play a key role in improving services in line with National policies and where appropriate, take a lead role on the nursing issues related to the implementation of National Service Frameworks applicable to sphere of responsibility.
  • Be responsible for HR issues within area of responsibility, taking action as necessary.
  • Undertake employer-related investigations as required.
  • Develop workforce plans as part of the workforce review and service developments, business planning.
  • Act as authorised signatory to budgets within area of responsibility where necessary.
  • Manage the pay and non-pay budgets within areas of responsibility.
  • Procure equipment as required and agreed.
  • Pro-actively manage the achievement of the WHO form in Theatres.
  • Ensure own continued professional development as appropriate to area of practice.
  • Provide appropriate and consistent professional advice, to the multi-disciplinary teams within the Trust.
  • Lead on corporate nursing issues as identified through the appraisal process and agreed by Director of Nursing and Governance and Clinical Service Manager.
Personal/Professional Development
  • Work at all times within the Professional Code of Conduct for nurses, taking accountability for professional actions and ensure that others do the same.
  • Actively participate in own PDRS to identify key objectives and development needs.
  • Personally, attend and present at relevant local and national conferences in order to share good practice and develop networks.
  • Actively seek peer support and feedback in order to discuss shared issues.
  • Partake in mentorship/supervision relationships as required both internally and externally.
  • Undertake relevant mandatory and other appropriate training, maintaining relevant clinical skills in order to maintain clinical competence.
