Colorectal Cancer Screening Nurse Specialist

Band 6 - Permanent

This role is essential in enhancing the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) by:

  • Collaborating effectively with the Programme Hub
  • Coordinating and delivering care from the screening facility to meet the needs of individuals participating in the screening initiative
  • Facilitating health promotion activities across various community sectors

Key Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity exists for a Colorectal Cancer Screening Nurse Specialist to join our dedicated team at the Bowel Screening Centre.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, highly driven, and adaptable in their work approach. You will be tasked with providing exceptional care to patients identified through the screening initiative, addressing their needs, which may include assessments for endoscopic procedures, delivering results, and facilitating referrals as necessary. You must possess the ability to make informed clinical decisions to manage patients throughout the screening process and provide follow-up care.

Applicants must be RGN registered with the NMC, demonstrate flexibility in working hours, and be willing to travel between associated sites as required. Previous experience in endoscopy, gastroenterology, or bowel cancer screening is advantageous but not mandatory.

Job Duties

  • Offer guidance, information, and support to individuals contacting the screening centre
  • Oversee care delivery for patients identified through the screening programme, addressing needs arising from:
    • Participation in screening
    • Positive screening results
    • Involvement in the Lynch syndrome programme
    • Assessment for fitness to undergo screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic procedures
    • Informed decision-making prior to screening interventions
    • Need for further treatment, surveillance, or discharge
  • Utilize specialized knowledge and advanced communication skills to provide support during difficult conversations regarding diagnosis and treatment
  • Ensure timely access to screening procedures and smooth transitions to agreed care pathways
  • Establish effective connections with local colorectal cancer multidisciplinary teams for timely patient transfers
  • Maintain the BCSP local database and participate in ongoing data collection and quality assurance
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient needs and implement care plans according to BCSP standards
  • Collaborate with other professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care, particularly regarding referrals

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Diploma in relevant field
  • Current UK driving license

Desirable:

  • Post-registration qualification in a specialty or related area
  • Experience in teaching and assessment

Experience

Essential:

  • Comprehensive clinical experience with specific expertise in the specialty
  • Involvement in service development and change implementation
  • Evidence of teaching and mentoring within the work environment

Skills

Essential:

  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialized nursing care
  • Effective communication skills across various settings
  • Proficient in presenting information clearly
