Consultant Surgeon Specializing in Inflammatory Bowel Conditions

Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Surgeon with a focus on inflammatory bowel conditions, including ileo-anal pouch procedures.

We are in search of a motivated and proactive Consultant who is eager to collaborate with our established team of 11 colorectal surgeons to provide exceptional patient care. This is a full-time role comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with dedicated time allocated for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The job plan and SPA allocation will undergo a formal review after a designated period to ensure alignment with service needs.

The successful candidate will be expected to manage both elective and emergency cases across multiple hospital sites. The on-call responsibilities are detailed in subsequent sections. This is an exciting time for our Trust, which has recently opened a state-of-the-art facility.

Our organization is dedicated to advancing surgical techniques and innovations, as evidenced by the services we provide.

Applicants must possess full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register for General Surgery through CCT or CESR (CP), or have European Community Rights, with the anticipated CCT/CESR (CP) date being within a specified timeframe of the interview.

Candidates should demonstrate a track record of excellence in technical surgical skills, particularly in colorectal surgery.

If selected, you will join a well-established department and will be expected to contribute to the evolution of our services.

Main Responsibilities

We invite applications from qualified individuals for the role of Consultant Surgeon with a specialization in inflammatory bowel disease within the General Surgery Care Group, Department of Colorectal Surgery, which operates across two hospital sites.

While this position is advertised as full-time, we welcome applications from those interested in part-time opportunities.

The role includes comprehensive administrative support, a dedicated workspace, and collaborative assistance from junior medical staff and allied health professionals. Our colorectal team comprises 11 consultants, 6 specialty trainees, and various other medical personnel, including surgical assistants and colorectal cancer nurse specialists. Additionally, we have a full-time surgical IBD nurse dedicated to managing IBD and pouch patients.

A dedicated consultant rota will be established to ensure consistent care for inpatients across multiple sites.

This position is a replacement role to address the growing demand for IBD services within our Colorectal Unit.

About Our Organization

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was formed through the merger of two acute Trusts, enhancing our ability to deliver high-quality healthcare services to the community.

This merger allows us to optimize service delivery, ensuring the best possible healthcare outcomes for our patients.

Our Trust operates several hospitals, serving a diverse population and providing specialized services to a broader regional area.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will primarily focus on managing patients with inflammatory bowel disease and neuroendocrine tumors. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to engage in one other subspecialty area, such as endometriosis or pelvic floor disorders, all of which are supported by dedicated teams and multidisciplinary meetings.

Participation in the on-call general surgery rota is expected, with daytime coverage provided by the emergency general surgery team and specialty consultants contributing to out-of-hours care. The anticipated general surgery rota is 1:20, with specialized colorectal coverage at 1:12.

Changes to the on-call structure may occur as the organization evolves.
