Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom NHS Full time
Consultant Surgeon Specializing in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The NHS is seeking to appoint a dedicated Consultant Surgeon with a profound interest in inflammatory bowel disease, particularly in ileo-anal pouch procedures.

We are in search of a proactive and enthusiastic Consultant who is eager to collaborate with our established team of colorectal consultants to provide exceptional patient care. This full-time position comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including 1.5 PAs allocated for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The job plan and SPA allocation will undergo a formal review after a six-month period, with adjustments made as necessary.

The successful candidate will be involved in both elective and emergency surgical duties across multiple hospital sites. The current phase for the NHS presents an exciting opportunity with the recent opening of a state-of-the-art facility.

The organization is committed to pioneering advancements in surgical techniques, reflecting our dedication to high-quality service delivery.

Applicants must possess full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register for General Surgery through CCT or CESR (CP) or hold European Community Rights. Evidence of excellence in technical surgical skills, particularly in colorectal surgery, is essential.

Joining our well-established unit means participating in the evolution of our future services.

Main Responsibilities

We invite applications from qualified individuals for the role of Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon with a focus on IBD within the General Surgery Care Group, Department of Colorectal Surgery. The role encompasses regular clinical responsibilities across two Trust sites.

While this position is advertised as full-time, we welcome applications from candidates seeking part-time opportunities based on individual merit.

The role includes comprehensive secretarial support, a dedicated office space, and collaborative assistance from junior doctors and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) within the broader colorectal team. Our department currently comprises 11 colorectal consultants, along with various surgical trainees and support staff.

A structured rota will ensure dedicated colorectal consultant coverage for inpatients, addressing the challenges of multi-site operations.

This position is a replacement role to meet the growing demand for IBD services within our Colorectal Unit.

About the Organization

The NHS was formed through the merger of two acute Trusts, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes across the region.

Our facilities serve a diverse population, providing a range of specialized services to millions in the surrounding areas.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to focus primarily on IBD and NET patients, with encouragement to engage in additional subspecialty work in areas such as endometriosis or pelvic floor disorders. All three services are regional tertiary referrals with dedicated teams.

Participation in the on-call general surgery rota is anticipated, with specialized colorectal cover during daytime hours.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice, with a place on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining this.
  • FRCS or an equivalent qualification.
  • Advanced Life Support certification.
  • Basic Surgical Skills instructor status.
  • Joint Association Gastroenterology (JAG) accreditation for colonoscopy.
Research and Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in general and colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic techniques.
  • Evidence of teaching experience within a university setting.
  • Prior involvement with NET tumours.
Personal Attributes
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities at trainee or consultant level.
Health and Compliance

Compliance with professional health standards as per GMC guidelines is required, along with a satisfactory Occupational Health examination.

This position is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

The NHS offers a competitive salary range for this role.
