Overview of the Position

In the role of Head of Subscription Services, your responsibilities will include:

  • Formulating and implementing a comprehensive global strategy for subscription acquisition and customer retention.
  • Spearheading marketing initiatives to execute ROI-focused paid acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Conducting ongoing analysis of competitive market trends to guide our strategic direction.
  • Evaluating audience data to identify customer segments and shape marketing strategies and product innovations.
  • Clearly communicating the value of our services to both existing and prospective customers.
  • Utilizing appropriate tools to engage and convert the audience (including content personalization, registration processes, newsletters, etc.).
  • Creating real-time performance reports that provide insights into our progress against key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Gradually building and leading a high-performing team that will establish a center of excellence for subscriptions across the organization.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Direct management and accountability for subscriber acquisition and retention efforts.
  • Leveraging data and ongoing testing to enhance average revenue per user (ARPU) and customer experience metrics.
  • Collaborating with editorial and product teams to refine, enhance, and develop services and products aimed at boosting subscription revenue.

Key Deliverables:

  • Crafting an audience proposition informed by insights to steer product development.
  • Developing and executing a market entry strategy for subscriptions.
  • Establishing revenue and ARPU targets along with a strategic plan to achieve them.
  • Setting customer churn and retention targets with a strategic plan for accomplishment.
  • Defining customer acquisition cost (CAC) and lifetime value (LTV) targets along with a strategic plan to meet them.
  • Implementing a continuous testing framework for offers and the conversion funnel using an A/B testing approach.
  • Conducting data-driven analyses to consistently enhance audience acquisition, conversion, and retention efforts.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the online media industry, preferably with a strong track record in the news sector.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to assess business opportunities and anticipate future customer needs within the media landscape.
  • A proactive approach with the capability to engage effectively at a detailed level.
  • A proven history in subscription acquisition, conversion, and retention, ideally in an international or business news context.
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • A successful track record in navigating complex and highly matrixed corporate environments.
  • Experience in a global organizational setting.
