About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deaf Family Support Worker to join our team at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. As a Deaf Family Support Worker, you will play a vital role in providing support to deaf children and their families, working closely with our multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist mental health practitioners in conducting initial assessments and developing intervention plans in conjunction with young people, parents, and professionals.
  • Undertake specific work with children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment plan, enhancing family communication, self-esteem work with children/young people.
  • Work collaboratively with families and other professionals to provide a comprehensive service.
  • Liaise with other agencies, referrers, and carers, establishing working relationships with key staff, including CAMHS, schools, and social services across England.
  • Build and maintain links with deaf organizations nationally and locally.
  • Contribute to the organization and/or coordination of group work and community projects with appropriate direction and support in response to identified need.
  • Provide information and advice to children/young people, families/carers on the maintenance of health and well-being, under the direction of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Offer advice, guidance, and support to parents/carers in attending to the physical, emotional, and social development of children.
  • Contribute to the language and communication assessment of the deaf child.
  • Assist in the implementation of language and communication therapy programs and approaches, monitoring and supporting their use with families, including the use of signs, symbols, communication charts.
  • Support the use of a range of alternative and augmentative communication strategies, including visual methods (symbols, PECS).
  • Be an active participant of the multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with other members.

Requirements

  • British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 or willingness to work towards achieving it.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health or Social Care or willingness to work towards achieving it.
  • Experience of working in the deaf community and deaf culture.
  • Experience of working with deaf children and families.
  • Experience of working with professionals from other agencies and services.
