London, Greater London, United Kingdom Octopus Energy Full time
We are looking for a highly skilled individual with a background in energy policy, regulation, and market architecture to join our Regulation Team. This role will involve collaboration with various departments to further our mission. Candidates with experience in both wholesale and retail markets, or those with specialized knowledge in retail regulation and policy, are particularly encouraged to consider this opportunity. We welcome applicants at different career stages, from those early in their professional journey to seasoned experts who can operate autonomously. A strong alignment with our organizational culture is essential.

Octopus Energy is dedicated to making affordable green energy accessible to all. As a frontrunner in the energy transition, we are implementing the necessary components for a renewable, adaptable, and efficient electricity system that incentivizes consumers to utilize energy during cost-effective and environmentally friendly periods. The Regulation Team plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges, leveraging insights from across the organization. With the government's commitment to Clean Energy by 2030 and an increased emphasis on energy affordability and home decarbonization, we aim to enhance our policy expertise in preparation for the next phase of market design and regulatory initiatives. Enhancing both wholesale and retail energy markets is vital to our mission. Significant reforms are required in the current wholesale market to establish an efficient renewable system that utilizes the vast array of flexible low-carbon resources available nationwide. Additionally, the retail market must foster rapid innovation, improved service, and greater value to effectively assist consumers in reducing their energy expenses and decarbonizing their homes.

Key Responsibilities

Formulate and secure internal consensus on Octopus Energy's perspectives regarding market design and regulation, utilizing thorough analysis and insights from the organization. Develop advocacy strategies in collaboration with our communications and public affairs teams, and establish partnerships with relevant organizations to enhance our success. Represent our interests in industry meetings and forums, fostering trust and credibility with regulatory bodies, consumer organizations, and other policymakers as necessary. Produce persuasive position papers and well-structured responses to regulatory consultations. Collaborate with relevant departments to prepare for and implement forthcoming regulatory and market changes.

Required Qualifications

A solid understanding of either electricity wholesale market design or retail market regulation. Experience in the energy sector or another regulated industry (such as finance, water, or telecommunications) as a consultant, regulator, government official, or regulatory expert within a consumer organization or regulated company. Candidates with experience in other regulated sectors should demonstrate their ability to apply that knowledge to the energy industry. Strong research and analytical capabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex issues clearly to non-specialists. Proficiency in Excel, strong presentation skills, and effective project management abilities. A proven track record that indicates a good fit with our organizational culture. A solid understanding of and commitment to our mission and business model.
