Contribute to the development of policies that foster a sustainable and equitable energy landscape for the UK.
OFGEM serves as the independent energy regulator for Great Britain, dedicated to safeguarding energy consumers, particularly those in vulnerable situations, by ensuring fair treatment and promoting a cleaner, greener environment.
Our mission involves collaboration with various industry stakeholders. Energy is the backbone of our society and economy, making our policy initiatives crucial and fulfilling. Our work protects consumers, empowers businesses, influences the energy sector, and drives significant societal and infrastructural transformations necessary for achieving a Net Zero future.
In this role, you will engage in a diverse and stimulating workload, which includes analyzing complex issues, engaging with stakeholders, and cultivating valuable relationships. You will leverage your expertise to draft policy proposals, briefings, consultations, and other essential documents that facilitate informed decision-making for maximum consumer benefit.
Your initial assignment will be within the Markets Directorate, specifically in the Smart Metering and Retail Market Operations team. This team addresses a broad range of policy matters affecting the energy sector, including smart meter rollout oversight, compliance with smart license obligations, industry codes, energy theft, and consumer-related smart issues.
We implement a Flexible Resourcing model, allowing you to work across OFGEM on various projects or remain in a team for an extended period to develop specialized skills and knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Development
- Conduct high-quality, timely, and thorough analysis of core issues and policy alternatives, resulting in evidence-based recommendations.
- Prepare clear and concise documents, including briefings, policy papers, consultations, impact assessments, and guidance materials.
- Lead and manage key workstreams and projects, ensuring effective internal and external stakeholder engagement by prioritizing, scoping, and delivering work.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Communicate the benefits, challenges, and trade-offs of policy proposals effectively to senior colleagues and partners.
- Facilitate collaboration across teams, supporting professionals, and other sources of evidence to identify and manage risks and issues.
- Represent OFGEM externally, fostering constructive relationships to ensure that challenges and issues are addressed in the interest of consumers.
Essential Qualifications
- In-depth industry knowledge, particularly regarding Radio Teleswitch, smart metering, and related license obligations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in public policy, energy, or net zero initiatives.
- Proven experience in engaging with and managing multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to oversee various work activities or projects to ensure timely progress.
