The House of Commons serves as a pivotal institution within the UK's democratic framework, offering a dynamic and engaging work environment.

Role Introduction

The Office of Speaker’s Counsel is tasked with delivering legal guidance to Mr Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and all associated staff teams. This office comprises twenty-five qualified legal professionals, including solicitors and barristers, supported by a full-time trainee legal executive and a part-time paralegal.

Key Responsibilities

The role of Joint Head of the Select Committee Legal Advisers' team involves overseeing and coordinating legal counsel for all Select Committees within the House of Commons. Key areas of focus include the Joint Committee on Human Rights, the Home Affairs Select Committee, and the Justice Select Committee.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing expert legal advice on both domestic and international human rights law to the Joint Committee on Human Rights, while managing the legal operations of that Committee.
  • Advising the Joint Committee on Human Rights in recognizing significant human rights matters within the UK.
  • Leading and supervising a team of highly skilled legal advisers.
  • Strategic oversight and planning for the team’s future, ensuring adequate legal support for committees amid evolving political and legal landscapes.

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Qualifications as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.
  • Extensive legal expertise, particularly in human rights law and practice.
  • A proven track record in leading a diverse team of motivated professionals, demonstrating inclusivity and sensitivity to team dynamics, including mentoring and development.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a competitive salary of £86,920, with an additional contribution of £23,468 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
