About the Role

The Office of Speaker’s Counsel is tasked with providing legal guidance to Mr Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and all associated staff teams. This office comprises twenty-five qualified legal professionals, including solicitors and barristers, supported by a full-time trainee legal executive and a part-time paralegal.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a Joint Head of the Select Committee Legal Advisers team, who will be instrumental in delivering and coordinating legal counsel to all Select Committees within the House of Commons. Key areas of focus include the Joint Committee on Human Rights, the Home Affairs Select Committee, and the Justice Select Committee.

Responsibilities for this position encompass:

  • Providing specialized legal advice and support on both domestic and international human rights law to the Joint Committee on Human Rights, while overseeing the legal activities of that Committee.
  • Advising the Joint Committee on Human Rights in recognizing significant human rights issues within the UK.
  • Managing and supervising a team of highly qualified legal advisers.
  • Strategic planning to ensure the team is well-prepared to provide appropriate legal support to committees in a dynamic political and legal landscape.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Qualification as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.
  • Extensive legal knowledge and expertise, particularly in human rights law and practice.
  • A proven track record of leading a team of motivated professionals with inclusivity and sensitivity to diverse needs, including development and coaching.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary of £86,920, the House of Commons contributes £23,468 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
