About the Role

The British Medical Association (BMA) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Deputy Head of General Practitioners Committee. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the BMA, supporting the work of GP committees and contributing to the development of healthcare policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the work of GP committees, providing strategic advice and guidance to committee chairs and executive teams.
  • Oversee the progression of committee workstreams, ensuring successful delivery of committee objectives.
  • Research and draft briefs and reports for committee members, providing high-quality, impactful policy analysis.
  • Work with committee members and colleagues across the BMA to develop and implement policy, providing strategic advice on issues within their remit.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with staff teams across the BMA, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Line manage team members, providing guidance and support to ensure successful team performance.
  • Oversight of governance and budgetary arrangements, along with elections for committees.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable strategic awareness, with experience of handling complex situations requiring tact and discretion.
  • Highly adept influencing skills, with experience of building strong relationships with counterparts, stakeholders, and senior colleagues.
  • Previous experience of managing and motivating a team, with a proven track record of success.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing skills, with experience of drafting high-quality, impactful policy reports and briefings.
  • Strong organisational skills, with a proactive approach to work and problem-solving.
  • Experience of project management or having oversight of multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • A proactive approach to work, with the ability to think quickly and respond to demands in a positive manner.
  • Ability to grasp new policy concepts quickly and undertake research and review of policy issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the health sector and medical profession, in particular GPs, is desirable.
  • Preferably have experience of working with committees.
