Position Overview

The Division of Surgery and Cancer is seeking a highly qualified individual to take on the role of Critical Care Matron.

We are in search of a dedicated, knowledgeable, and empathetic senior nurse with extensive experience in Critical Care, who will provide both clinical and managerial guidance. As a role model, you will inspire, motivate, and empower your team. Your inclusive leadership approach will significantly impact key responsibilities within the Critical Care Unit, including workforce management, educational initiatives, patient and staff experiences, and care pathways. A solid understanding of governance and risk management is crucial for ensuring patient safety; thus, you will need to possess a comprehensive knowledge base to support and advise your team using PSIRF principles.

You will collaborate with a well-established team in a state-of-the-art facility, taking on the responsibility and accountability to maintain high standards and advance the service through a proactive and positive approach.

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team and other Matrons within the Surgical Division, you will receive support and guidance that will enhance your professional portfolio and personal development in this fulfilling role.

Main Responsibilities

As the nursing lead for the service, you will play a pivotal role in managing and leading the critical care team to ensure operational efficiency and safety, while fostering a compassionate and supportive team environment that prioritizes well-being and a safe workplace culture.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Encouraging innovative practices and promoting high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Leading quality improvement initiatives, budget management, change processes, and resource allocation within the department.
  • Setting an example through motivation and empowering your team.
  • Performing advanced clinical assessments and treatments, collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to meet patient needs, particularly regarding ongoing care and discharge planning.
  • Providing guidance and support to patients, caregivers, and families, ensuring visibility and accessibility as the primary contact for information and concerns, while liaising with other staff and external agencies as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) with a Nursing Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Specialist Critical Care Qualification.
  • NMC Registration.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience as a Nurse Manager in the relevant specialty.

  • At least 2 years of experience at Band 7 level in a Critical Care setting.
  • Knowledge of governance and Care Quality Standards.
