Job Overview

The Division of Surgery and Cancer is seeking a distinguished candidate to assume the role of Critical Care Matron.

We are in search of a driven, knowledgeable, and empathetic senior nurse with extensive experience in Critical Care to provide both clinical and managerial guidance. You will serve as a role model, inspiring, motivating, and empowering your team. Your compassionate and inclusive leadership style will significantly impact key responsibilities within the Critical Care Unit, including nursing workforce management, education, patient and staff experiences, and patient pathways. A solid understanding of governance and risk management is crucial for ensuring patient safety; therefore, you will need to possess a strong working knowledge to support and advise the team using PSIRF principles.

You will collaborate with an established team in a modern, purpose-built facility, taking on the responsibility and accountability to enhance and maintain high standards while driving the service forward with a positive and proactive approach.

Close collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and other Matrons within the Surgical Division will be essential. We are committed to providing you with the support and direction necessary to expand your professional portfolio and personal development in this highly rewarding position.

Main Responsibilities

As the nursing lead for the service, you will play a pivotal role in guiding and managing the critical care team to ensure efficiency and safety, while fostering a compassionate and supportive team environment that prioritizes well-being and a safe working culture.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Encouraging innovative practices and promoting high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Leading quality improvement initiatives, budget management, change processes, and resource allocation within the department.
  • Setting an example of motivation and empowerment for the team.
  • Performing advanced clinical assessments and treatments, collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to meet patient needs, particularly regarding ongoing care and discharge planning.
  • Providing guidance and support to patients, caregivers, and relatives by being visible and accessible, serving as the primary point of contact for information and concerns, and liaising with other staff, clinical teams, and external agencies as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • RGN, Nursing Degree or equivalent experience
  • Specialist Critical Care Qualification
  • NMC Registered

Desirable:

  • Experience as a Nurse Manager within the specific specialty applied for

Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience at Band 7 level in a Critical Care environment
  • Knowledge of the governance agenda and the role of Care Quality Standards.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of advanced clinical practice

Skills

Essential:

  • Proven clinical experience in Critical Care; clinically credible
  • Evidence of effective teamwork within and across clinical teams
  • Leadership qualifications/skills
