Position Overview

The role of the Clinical Education Coordinator is designed to:

Enhance the availability of practice assessors and supervisors within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to facilitate effective learning in clinical environments.

Provide support to managers, assessors, and supervisors in their roles.

Ensure the provision of high-quality placements that enable safe, effective, and compassionate care, thus securing a sustainable future for the nursing and nursing associate workforce.

Engage in relevant educational sessions at partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Participate in teaching within clinical settings for both pre-registration and post-registration programs.

Contribute to the ongoing professional development of nurses across various fields (mental health, learning disabilities, adult and child), registered nursing associates, and other allied health professionals.

Facilitate simulation-based learning experiences for qualified nurses and pre-registration students.

Act as an assessor in practice as needed.

Support learners in clinical settings to enrich their educational journey.

The successful candidate will be expected to cover various regions, including West Sussex, East Sussex, North West Sussex, and Brighton and Hove, with occasional travel to other areas as required.

Main Responsibilities

Lead the Trust's Preceptorship initiative.

Increase the number of practice assessors and supervisors to bolster learning opportunities.

Facilitate the provision of high-quality clinical placements for students.

Support managers, assessors, and supervisors while serving as a liaison between Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Sussex, NHS Foundation Trust, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, and HEIs regarding students in NMC-approved programs.

Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care through high-quality placements for all learners and nursing apprentices.

Contribute to educational days at universities and in clinical practice.

About Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

The Clinical Education Coordinator will operate within the Department of Nursing Research, Education, and Development, overseeing placements for pre-registration nursing, paramedic students, trainee nursing associates, and registered nurse degree apprenticeships. Clinical placements are essential for student learning, and providing exceptional placements enhances both individual development and the Trust's educational culture. This role is both challenging and rewarding, aimed at delivering high-quality education and training in practice.

Job Responsibilities

Support managers, assessors, and supervisors while collaborating with HEIs whose trainees are placed with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Participate in course boards and meetings with HEI partners, offering strong professional leadership and support to all staff involved in placements.

Develop communication networks and foster close working relationships with managers, practice assessors, supervisors, and placement areas.

Play a key role in curriculum development, ensuring that work-based learning principles, clinical needs, and current practices are integrated.

Assist in recruiting candidates for nursing associate apprenticeships and nursing degree apprenticeships.

Support NMC quality assurance monitoring and HEI external examiner visits.

Deliver educational sessions as part of the course offerings from the Nursing Research, Education, and Development department.

Compile and analyze data and reports necessary for project evaluations.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered mental health or learning disability nurse
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Evidence of attaining or working towards a degree-level qualification
  • Teaching qualification or progress towards obtaining one
  • Completion of recognized practice assessor training
  • Extensive post-registration experience and current training updates

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Clinical practice/management experience in mental health or learning disabilities
  • Experience as an assessor/supervisor in a clinical environment
  • Awareness of current issues in learning disability nursing
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to implement change in the workplace
  • Knowledge of professional issues in mental health and learning disability nursing, education, training, and development
  • Familiarity with NMC Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018)
