Lead Clinical Nurse for Geriatric Oncology Care

Position Overview
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Lead Clinical Nurse to join our Senior Adult Oncology Service (SAOS). This role is essential in providing specialized care for older patients facing complex health challenges related to cancer treatment.
Key Responsibilities
The Lead Clinical Nurse will:
- Oversee the daily clinical management of patients within the SAOS, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure personalized care delivery.
- Receive and assess referrals to the SAOS, ensuring appropriate triage and management.
- Conduct Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGA) to identify and address frailty, creating tailored management plans for patients.
- Practice autonomously while adhering to professional standards and accountability.
- Utilize advanced clinical judgment and decision-making skills to provide high-level care during face-to-face and virtual consultations.
- Prescribe and monitor medications as an independent prescriber, ensuring therapeutic effectiveness and compliance with best practices.
- Employ advanced communication techniques to deliver holistic nursing care, advocating for the needs of older patients and their families.
- Facilitate shared decision-making processes within the SAOS and the broader healthcare team.
- Engage with various oncology support teams to enhance patient care and treatment outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, collecting and evaluating clinical data to inform practice improvements.
Leadership and Development
The successful candidate will also:
- Co-lead initiatives to optimize care models and clinical governance within the SAOS.
- Drive quality improvement efforts, identifying opportunities for service enhancement.
- Engage stakeholders and foster partnerships to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.
- Act as a role model, promoting a supportive environment for staff development and high-quality patient care.
Research and Education
In addition, the Lead Clinical Nurse will:
- Monitor service activity and outcomes, utilizing clinical audit and quality improvement methodologies.
- Encourage patient and staff involvement in service development initiatives.
- Contribute to educational programs and mentorship within the team, ensuring continuous professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess:
- An MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or a related field.
- Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification.
- Significant post-registration nursing experience, particularly in managing complex older patients.
- Experience in conducting comprehensive geriatric assessments and quality improvement projects.
