Position Overview

The Inpatient Services Directorate is seeking a dedicated and visionary nurse leader to enhance our team of Senior Sisters overseeing the Divisional clinical areas. Our current band 7 team collaborates closely to drive continuous quality enhancement in patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage a shift, ensuring effective communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
  • Advocate for patients and utilize clinical judgment to assess their needs and establish long-term care objectives.
  • Engage in open communication during safety huddles, sharing critical information that affects team dynamics and patient care.
  • Actively participate in the daily operations of the ward.
  • Support the senior sister in managing the clinical area and mentoring junior staff.
  • Ensure the ward is adequately staffed, conduct return-to-work interviews, and assist junior staff in developing their skills and confidence in patient care.
  • Take responsibility for a small team, ensuring their annual professional development reviews are completed and that their essential training is current.

Management and Administration Duties

  • Provide managerial support to staff and serve as a mentor to designated personnel.
  • Lead the acute oncology services on the ward, implementing changes to enhance clinical practices in response to capacity and demand.
  • Collaborate with the patient flow team and other departments to optimize bed utilization.
  • Work closely with discharge teams and senior sisters to ensure efficient bed management.
  • Maintain close cooperation with medical staff to ensure effective bed usage.
  • Assess, plan, and implement clinical care while maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Organize daily work schedules and off-duty rosters to ensure an effective skill mix and staff deployment based on patient needs.
  • Assist in managing the staff and non-staff budget within established limits.
  • Collaborate with service providers to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and nutrition.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations and conduct relevant risk assessments.
  • Document and report all incidents and complaints in accordance with established policies, addressing them promptly and compassionately.
  • Ensure adherence to Trust policies and procedures, implementing new ones as necessary.
  • Maintain professional standards by ensuring all team members comply with the uniform policy.
  • Report to the Lead Nurse regarding patient activities and staff development.
  • Support senior staff in conducting meaningful appraisals for their team members.
  • Ensure each designated staff member engages in a personal development plan to maximize their potential.
  • Assist in the recruitment process for the unit.
  • Manage short and long-term sickness and absence in collaboration with the Matron and Human Resources.
  • Address any disciplinary matters in accordance with Trust procedures.
  • Supervise the procurement of supplies and equipment with care and efficiency.
  • Act in a leadership capacity as required.

Training and Education Responsibilities

  • Stay current with all IV training programs, including annual updates, and maintain competency in all clinical practice areas.
  • Ensure all staff receive appropriate training and support.
  • Present at training sessions and conferences.
  • Initiate and conduct research and audits that will influence clinical practice.
  • Maintain competency in essential clinical skills, including ECGs and life support.
  • Attend all mandatory training days and ensure staff compliance.

Professional Expectations

  • Possess expert knowledge to advise and support nursing staff regarding emergency admissions and related issues.
  • Collaborate closely with the medical team and other members of the multidisciplinary team to promote the highest standards of patient care.
  • Participate in the on-call rota for hospital coverage outside of regular hours.
  • Represent the unit at the Band 7 forum.
  • Identify areas for improvement within the department and lead relevant projects.
  • Stay informed about internal and external issues affecting the Trust and ensure the team is well-informed.
  • Contribute to policy development for the unit and Trust.
  • Be aware of divisional objectives and the Trust's corporate plan.

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) Level 1
  • Degree-level qualification
  • Post-registration certification in oncology

  • Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience
  • Relevant experience in acute care settings
