Lead Oncologist for Breast Cancer Treatment

Manchester, United Kingdom The Christie NHS FT Full time

Position Overview

This role involves a commitment of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, focusing on delivering expert consultant services within the Medical Oncology Breast Disease Group.

The appointed medical oncologist will collaborate with the Breast team to ensure a holistic clinical service for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. This encompasses care in outpatient, inpatient, and ambulatory settings, administering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and contributing to the Breast Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Overseeing the management of breast cancer patients, including those participating in clinical trials, ensuring appropriate treatment decisions and continuous care.
  • Engaging in all facets of clinical governance, which includes updating protocols, guidelines, and conducting clinical audits under the guidance of senior consultants.
  • Participating in ongoing research initiatives and identifying new avenues to enhance research within the team.
  • Developing and revising evidence-based protocols for patient care and fulfilling the administrative responsibilities associated with patient management.
  • Maintaining professional development in line with the standards set by the Royal College of Physicians.
  • Contributing to the education of medical students on oncology-related subjects.
  • Delivering lectures as part of a comprehensive postgraduate teaching program.
  • Actively mentoring junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Conducting clinical audits as a member of the Medical Staff Committee.

Additionally, the consultants in this department participate in an on-call rota, which entails a commitment to a full week of on-call duties every twenty weeks. This includes conducting post-take ward rounds to assess newly admitted patients and those requiring urgent attention. This service operates seven days a week. Given the infrequent nature of on-call duties, the associated PAs are integrated into the job plan rather than compensated with time off.

The post holder will have access to an office equipped with necessary technology and administrative support.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • MRCP or an equivalent qualification.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) with the proposed CCT date within six months of the interview.
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration.
  • Documented evidence of productive ethical research relevant to oncology.
  • Extensive experience in oncology, particularly in breast cancer.

Desirable:

  • An advanced degree.
  • Recent publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player, adaptable to changing circumstances, with proven leadership capabilities. Strong communication skills, integrity, and a commitment to professional excellence are essential.

We are dedicated to fostering a supportive environment that promotes both personal and professional growth within our team.
