Senior Clinical Oncology Specialist

Manchester, United Kingdom The Christie NHS FT Full time

Position Overview

This role encompasses 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week on a permanent contract within the Clinical Oncology Breast Disease Group.

The outpatient consultations will primarily take place at the main facility, with virtual participation in the multidisciplinary team meetings held weekly.

The appointed Clinical Oncologist will collaborate with the Breast team to deliver a thorough clinical service for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. This includes managing care in outpatient, inpatient, and ambulatory settings, administering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and Radiotherapy, while also contributing Clinical Oncology expertise to the Breast multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to cultivate a profound interest in Breast oncology, focusing on the delivery of radiotherapy and systemic therapy. The post holder will be one of 11 Clinical Oncology specialists dedicated to Breast cancer and will actively participate in the breast multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include conducting clinic duties at designated sites and providing coverage for remote consultations.

Within the broader team, the post holder will join a group of Clinical and Medical Oncologists serving the Breast multidisciplinary team. This unit is composed of specialized surgeons, radiology, and pathology teams, along with breast care nurses who guide patients through their cancer journey.

The role involves active participation in all facets of radiotherapy and systemic therapy, supported by a collaborative team structure that encourages cross-cover of clinical responsibilities. Training and mentorship opportunities are available as needed.

Collaboration with both medical and clinical oncology research teams is essential, and the successful applicant will be expected to engage in ongoing research initiatives. Opportunities for involvement in advanced technical radiotherapy techniques, including SABR, breast VMAT, protons, and MR Linac, are also available. The team is committed to research and trial activities, and the appointee will be expected to contribute to these efforts.

On-Call Responsibilities

Consultants in the department participate in an on-call rota, which entails a commitment to a full week every twenty weeks. This includes conducting post-take ward rounds each morning to assess newly admitted patients and any escalated cases. This on-call commitment occurs seven days a week, and due to the infrequent nature of on-call duties, the associated Programmed Activities are integrated into the job plan rather than compensated with time off.

The post holder will have access to office facilities equipped with a computer, intranet, internet, and administrative support.

Professional Development

The organization supports Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in accordance with the guidelines set by the General Medical Council and relevant royal colleges, providing both time and financial resources for these activities. A mentoring scheme is available for all newly appointed consultants.

Job Planning

The job plan outlines the expectations of the role and may be adjusted through mutual agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager, in response to service requirements. Annual reviews of job plans will assess all aspects of the role, including educational components and professional development goals.
