Job Overview

This position is a secondment role focused on enhancing breast cancer services.

The appointed candidate will collaborate with the team to promote and advance breast cancer care within the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, serving as a representative for the breast clinical nurse specialists (BCNS) team. They will deliver professional, clinical, and innovative care within a multidisciplinary environment after completing any necessary training.

The Macmillan Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist will be a vital part of the multidisciplinary team, offering expert guidance and support to patients with suspected or confirmed breast cancer and benign breast conditions. They will apply specialist nursing knowledge and skills in patient management, coordinating with colleagues across various care settings to ensure comprehensive assessments, holistic care packages, and timely, evidence-based treatment.

The successful candidate will design and implement specialized educational programs for healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. They will work collaboratively with healthcare colleagues to enhance the breast service.

Work will be conducted across various facilities within the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, including the breast unit.

Main Responsibilities

The Macmillan Breast CNS will manage several nurse-led clinics, including consultations to discuss treatment options in detail, which significantly reduces the time consultants spend on consent forms and ensures patients are well-informed, thereby minimizing potential litigation risks. The nurses will also clarify complex oncological treatments, conduct thorough wound assessments and management, and hold telephonic consultations with patients, further reducing the necessity for outpatient visits.

Documentation of all interactions will be maintained in the Trust's electronic system.

Additional responsibilities include covering various clinics such as one-stop clinics, follow-up clinics, reconstruction clinics, and oncology clinics, all aimed at supporting patients by identifying and addressing their individual needs. A portion of their time will also be dedicated to attending multidisciplinary team meetings, which is essential for ensuring patient advocacy.

The nurses will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that includes consultants, radiographers, oncologists, and pathology staff.
