Senior Investment Specialist - Private Debt

Mercer's Private Debt team is responsible for (i) researching Private Debt investment strategies and investment opportunities, (ii) planning, constructing and managing Private Debt portfolios, and (iii) generating the intellectual capital on Private Debt that supports Mercer's global Investments platform. The team serves a diverse client base, including both Mercer's delegated solutions clients and advisory clients - across defined benefit, defined contribution, insurance, endowment & foundations, and wealth management clients.

  • The role will encompass (i) leading Investment due diligence on Private Debt Investment opportunities and presenting the findings to senior stakeholders, (ii) portfolio management, construction and monitoring in relation to a broad range of Private Debt portfolios, and (iii) marketing the team's capabilities and intellectual capital to current and prospective clients as well as the broader organisation
  • Candidates will have extensive knowledge of the Private Debt industry, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to function in both team-based and independent activities. The candidate will need to have an analytical mind-set, intellectual curiosity, and a desire to build relationships with a wide range of subject matter specialists and investment practitioners both within and outside Mercer

We will count on you to:

  • Investment Due Diligence: Lead comprehensive due diligence processes for evaluating and underwriting prospective primary funds and coinvestments. Responsibilities will include leading onsite manager meetings, planning due diligence and conducting reference calls. You will lead a small project team to produce research reports (both quantitative and qualitative) that summarise your views on a strategy with the intention of determining an appropriate rating for a given fund or a recommendation on a coinvestment
  • Portfolio Construction: Contributing to portfolio construction efforts through proactive idea generation and implementation views for both our commingled funds and bespoke client portfolios. This will include traditional drawdown, evergreen and semi-liquid private debt vehicles
  • Private Debt specialist: Act as a specialist in client meetings and prospective pitches by representing the broader business on all matters relating to private debt, including presenting analysis and communicating the opinions of the team in relation to investment opportunities and market views
  • Senior stakeholder management: Prepare reports and presentations with relevant commentary and analytics to facilitate transparency and communication with the Investment Committee, Clients and other external parties as required
  • Portfolio Monitoring: Lead/co-ordinate the monitoring of all private debt funds and client portfolios under the team's remit
  • Develop the value proposition: Contribute to discussions on the value proposition of our Private Debt business and develop and maintain materials to effectively position the asset class, investment performance and products in support of sales and client retention
  • Intellectual Capital development: Author industry research pieces and whitepapers to position Mercer as a thought-leader in the Private Debt industry

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to build relationships, negotiate effectively and problem solve with a wide range of internal stakeholders
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint

  • CFA and/or ability to demonstrate strong interest in financial markets, investing, portfolio construction theory and macroeconomics
  • A wealth of experience in Alternative investments, specifically Private Debt, portfolio construction/management, investment specialist roles, and client facing activity
