Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Laboratory Research Assistant to join Prof. Nick Powell's group within the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.

The main purpose of the role is to support the administration and management of the research laboratories of the Powell Group, working together with a friendly and active team of academic, research, laboratory, and administrative staff.

The post-holder will be supervised and line-managed by Prof. Nick Powell, co-lead of the BRC Digestive Diseases theme.

Duties/Key Responsibilities

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Day-to-day maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Assisting with purchase of general consumables and/or services and dealing with general duties while ensuring compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Providing teaching, supervision and training of staff and students in local laboratory procedures.
  • Supporting the efficient and smooth running of all laboratory resources in a manner consistent with good laboratory practice.
  • Supporting core laboratory facilities within the Section (e.g. Tissue Culture suites, Histology areas, liquid nitrogen facilities, gas stores/cylinders/alarm systems).
  • Maintaining accurate records, and providing training, advice, and guidance for the use of facilities to staff and students.

Essential requirements

  • Life Sciences degree (BSc or equivalent).
  • Significant experience of working in a laboratory.
  • Proficient in laboratory techniques including tissue culture, histology, molecular biology, PCR, genotyping.
  • Experience of processing human biological samples, including cataloguing and maintaining records according to HTA requirements
  • Experience in overseeing safe operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and training staff and students in equipment use.
