About the job

The main purpose of this role is to ensure South Western Railway conducts a safe and secure operation. The postholder will lead on developing and delivering Fire Safety and Security assurance plans, collaborating with colleagues working across all departments to reinforce Fire and Security standards and drive continuous improvement. The post holder will develop and maintain South Western Railways Fire strategy, conduct Fire Safety Assurance audits and be a first point of contact for all matters relating to Fire Safety matters and ensure compliance to relevant legislation across the network.

The post holder's primary objective will be to ensure South Western Railway keep its staff and customers safe, by managing effective process control in relation to standards set by the safety management systems, managing audit findings, assign action owners, and track recommendations through to completion.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Develop and deliver Fire assurance audits of all SWR premises providing guidance to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and deliver Fire Safety risk assessments, tracking actions and holding stakeholders to account.
  • Provide guidance to construction and project managers in relation to Fire safety and Security.
  • Carry out Security assessments of SWR locations, and implement change to ensure safety of staff, public and locations.
  • Support Security testing of SWR staff in stations, depots and buildings in accordance with DfT protocols
  • Support Fire and Security training including refresher inputs.
  • Produce updates regarding audit activity and actions on behalf of the Senior Safety Assurance Manager for review at key meetings including the Executive Safety Group (Directors), Safety Development and Delivery Group (Heads Of) and Joint Safety Committee (Unions).
  • Manage the company action tracking system and associated audit actions to ensure that all significant recommendations from internal audits are logged and their progress tracked to completion.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders within the business and advise on matters of Safety and Security.
  • Participate in key industry groups as determined by the Senior Safety Assurance Manager.
  • Maintain theoretical and practical competence in the field of Safety and Security, including the application of relevant legislation and industry requirements.

As a minimum, you will need to have:

  • Working knowledge of Fire Safety legislation and understanding of published guidance
  • Experience of undertaking fire safety risk assessments.
  • Experience of auditing within a fire or security role.
  • Be able to communicate audit findings via report writing.
  • Be confident in challenging unsafe working practices or conditions.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, self-motivated and able to set and achieve demanding targets.

About the location

South Western Railways HQ is based on the 4th Floor at South Bank Central, a stone's throw from the River Thames and a 10 minute walk from our busiest station, Waterloo. It is local to many well-known attractions, restaurants and retail facilities and is easily accessible by public transport.

Working an average of 37 hours per week over 5 days
