DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Expert Practice (Clinical)

  • To deliver expert clinical practice through direct care, consultancy and clinical supervision of practitioners (at least 0.2 wte/1 day a week)
  • Utilises and advises on the use of a range of specialist assessments for effective care planning.
  • To be able to communicate complicated and sensitive information to service users, their carers and other professionals and to manage complex issues around consent.
  • Provides expert knowledge of health care needs of children and young people, utilises this in the development of strategies/protocols.
  • Provides advice on therapeutic interventions for individuals with complex presentations.
  • Ensure the development of care programme approach (or alternative) in CAMHS applying this to those with complex health needs as well as mental health and challenging behaviour.
  • Provide consultancy to all clinicians and other health professionals as appropriate, in order to cascade clinical expertise, enable the development of a skill base in order to ensure best practice and clinical quality.
  • Provide expert clinical and professional supervision and mentorship to clinicians working with complex service user presentations.
  • To develop, implement and monitor standards of care / clinical quality in CAMHS in line with Trust and national requirements.
  • Responsible for CAMHS procedural development.
  • Makes critical complex, sensitive judgements of the highest order to satisfy the expectation and demands of the post.
  • Provide highly specialised professional and clinical advice and support to colleagues where standard protocols do not apply.
  • To act as a strategic link / establish networks with acute hospitals, primary care networks, third sector partners, local authorities/social care services and community providers in order to develop joint protocols / care pathways.
  • Exercise a high degree of professional autonomy.
  • Maintain professional registration and work within professional standards and guidance at all times.

Professional Leadership and Consultancy (leadership)

  • To lead on the pathway review of the CAMHS Services to understand the current pathways and implement changes that will lead to a more effective and efficient services for children and young people and their families/carers in the region.
  • To lead on the development of clinical skills specific to CAMHS clinicians in line with national developments and the national reviews of specific skills for the mental health workforce and impart and model these skills to clinicians within the service and also in training situations by providing teaching sessions.
  • To provide robust and highly visible leadership to the division's inpatient and community CAMHS Services
  • Articulate and promote the distinctive contribution of CAMHS Services at local, regional and national level. Contribute to the national children and young people's mental health agenda, and the development of the role of clinicians in this area of care.
  • Form networks with other Trusts and agencies at a regional and national level in order to identify developments in practice and variations and gaps in service provision.
  • Plan, initiate and evaluate innovations in clinical practice which are evidenced / research based.
  • Take a lead role and shape the development of joint working arrangements with partner organisations for CAMHS Services at a local level.
  • Act as a Trust lead for CAMHS Services learning from experience, overseeing reporting and implementation of learning from local systems.
  • Actively participate in the development and delivery of the Trust clinical strategy and lead on the Trust clinical strategy with regard to the development of CAMHS Services care.
  • To represent the division at Trust level meetings.
  • To represent the Trust at national, regional and system meetings and participate in review of national health and government initiatives in order to influence change at national level.
  • To deliver expert clinical opinions in area of specialism to Trust Directors and other agencies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership and change management skills.
  • Improve standards and quality to deliver professional practice which is underpinned by up to date research and contemporary evidence.
  • Identify service opportunities and developments for the area of speciality and actively contributes / leads on implementation.
  • To review and lead on the development of new areas of clinical specialism within CAMHS Services care
  • Publish work relating to expert practice and innovations in practice of CAMHS Services within the Trust.
  • To use development of wider skills in relation to CAMHS are to consider different approaches to service user care with colleagues.
  • To contribute to the Trust debate on the Consultant Practitioner role and to the development of further Consultant Practitioner roles throughout the Trust.
  • Actively promote networking opportunities for all nurses and take the lead in specific networking groups.

Education and Development

  • To represent the Trust at meetings with the local HEI's with regard to the development of appropriate CAMHS training opportunities and to develop teaching plans and deliver training / lecturing on these courses as appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for identifying the practice education and development needs CAMHS practitioners, clinicians and other health professionals within the field of practice. Encourage shared learning between the three aspects of care.
  • Offer supervision and mentoring opportunities to both pre and post registration clinicians within the division.
  • Create a learning environment in each aspect of care. Teach in the practice setting, observations, peer review, case conferences and multi-agency meetings as appropriate to the context.
  • Work with colleagues within local HEIs, local NHS and other organisations to design and deliver specialist training programmes integrating theory and practice.
  • Contribute to workforce development plans.
  • Liaise with appropriate personnel to develop a training needs analysis, ensuring an appropriate response to these needs.
  • Contribute to and influence the development of nurse education programmes with local universities. Develop apprenticeship opportunities for CAMHS nursing. Develop post registration opportunities within local HEIs.
  • Co-ordinate the input of other clinicians into the education programmes.
  • Sustain productive partnerships with local and national learning institutes.
  • Through modelling mentorship and clinical supervision plays a key role in leadership and professional development.
  • Identify own training needs through undertaking development reviews.
  • Maintain an effective and valid professional registration through fulfilling revalidation requirements.
  • Contribute to national conferences and workshops.
  • Co-produce and co-deliver education and training programmes in partnership with children, young people their families and carers.

Practice and Service Development, Research and Evaluation (Research)

  • Contribute to the research community within the Trust, other local providers and partner agencies and local HEIs.
  • Initiate and undertake research independently and in collaboration with others in order to contribute to the growing evidence base for interventions, clinical effectiveness and to raise the profile of the Trusts research portfolio.
  • Develop user, carer and family involvement in CAMHS health research.
  • Lead on developing and facilitating improvement methods in teams.
  • Identify and influence health care research priorities for the service user group at local level and facilitate and support projects undertaken by others.
  • Raise the profile of clinical research within the Trust and externally.
  • Ensure effective dissemination of any work undertaken at a local and national level.
  • Ensure appropriate training and development opportunities in research audit and clinical effectiveness for CAMHS Services.
  • Can utilise and establish research databases.
  • Promotes and demonstrates through own practice, research based and clinically effective interventions.
  • Actively contribute to the Trust clinical audit and promotes this across clinical services.
  • Contribute to service development of care pathways for children and young people in all areas of the Trust.
  • Ensure the use of evidence based clinical quality outcomes measures across CAMHS Services, leading on the analysis and triangulation of this data in determining quality care.
  • Ensure quality improvement is embedded in practice across CAMHS Services with mechanism for sharing learning across the Trust, system and wider networks/forums.

  • Extensive specialist knowledge and experience of clinical issues relating to complex/comorbid mental and physical health

  • Track record of effective leadership or service management
  • Experience of developing nursing / service protocols
  • Demonstrate understanding of risk assessment and management
  • Experience and understanding of relating national policy and the health and social care guidelines to service development
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries working collaboratively with multi-professional teams / agencies in an effective way
  • Evidence of regular participation / leading in research and audit
