Position Overview
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) plays a vital role within the NHS, responsible for the collection and processing of millions of blood donations annually. Our team of Healthcare Scientists is essential in supporting NHS Hospitals by processing, testing, and distributing blood and its components, as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic services related to blood transfusion, stem cell transplantation, and tissue banking.
The IBGRL Red Cell Reference department is recognized globally for its immunohaematology reference services, catering to both NHS Blood and Transplant and the international transfusion community. We focus on complex and intriguing red cell immunohaematology challenges, frequently involving rare blood types. The RCR is distinguished by the scientific expertise of its dedicated staff and an unmatched collection of rare cells and sera. Collaborating with global colleagues, the RCR laboratory continues to contribute significantly to advancements in the field of human blood groups. Additionally, we maintain the International Rare Donor Panel.
As an HCPC registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist with substantial post-registration experience, you will possess a specialist qualification in Transfusion/Transplantation Science. Candidates who are Biomedical Scientists eager to enhance their transfusion skills will be considered for this role, initially compensated as a Band 5 while gaining the necessary experience and qualifications. Our priority is to appoint a Specialist Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Band 6.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct, analyze, document, and interpret a variety of laboratory investigations and technical procedures concerning patient test results for organ transplantation and blood transfusion, with team support.
- Provide guidance and training to new and less experienced personnel.
- Handle blood and tissue samples while operating various laboratory analyzers and equipment.
- Be prepared to work flexible hours, including weekends and bank holidays, as per departmental roster requirements.
Candidate Profile
Experience and Expertise
- Proficient in utilizing a range of laboratory analyzers and equipment (Band 5).
- Experienced in diverse scientific techniques (Band 5).
- Possess broad scientific knowledge with specialized expertise in transfusion/transplantation science, acquired through previous Biomedical Scientist roles (Band 6).
- Skilled in specialized laboratory techniques using complex equipment (Band 6).
- Experienced in prioritizing and delegating tasks to staff, ensuring deadlines are met (Band 6).
- Familiar with UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS), and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines (Band 6).
- Proficient in Information Technology.
- Experienced in report writing, presentation preparation, and staff training and mentoring (Band 6).
Qualifications and Training
- HCPC registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
- Science graduate with relevant postgraduate training, such as the British Blood Transfusion Society specialist certificate or the British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Diploma (Band 6).
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Willingness to pursue further training and development opportunities.
