Position Overview

Our laboratories are dedicated to comprehensive blood analysis and screening for microbiological indicators utilizing advanced automated systems. Each blood donation undergoes thorough screening for atypical antibodies, and a selection is also typed for a diverse array of antigens to meet the specific needs of patients requiring antigen-negative blood.

We are seeking a Lead Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) with specialized expertise in diagnostic and testing laboratory operations. A recognized qualification in Transfusion or Transplantation Science is essential. The successful candidate will be adept at conducting, analyzing, and interpreting both standard and intricate testing or diagnostic evaluations. This senior role entails overseeing a team of Biomedical Scientist staff while providing technical guidance within the department. You will serve as a mentor, positively impacting the team and fulfilling the responsibilities associated with this managerial position.

Key Responsibilities

In this capacity, you will be expected to:

  • Conduct, analyze, interpret, document, and report both routine and complex testing evaluations.
  • Oversee the daily operations of one or more laboratory teams, ensuring the quality of work and accuracy of results.
  • Offer technical leadership and significantly contribute to the quality management of your designated section.
  • Educate and mentor Healthcare Scientist personnel.
  • Assume some responsibilities of the Laboratory Manager during their absence and provide mentorship to all laboratory staff, contributing to their professional development.

Weekend and Bank Holiday work may be required during operational challenges, with appropriate prior notice provided.

Candidate Profile

Experience and Expertise

  • Extensive background in diagnostic and testing laboratory environments with profound knowledge of Transfusion science.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant policies, standards, and guidelines, including Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology/UKAS Accreditation, and BCSH guidelines.
  • Proven experience in training and mentoring staff.
  • Proficient in Information Technology, particularly with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Educational Qualifications

  • Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience at a Master’s level OR
  • Higher specialist knowledge obtained through examination by a professional body or demonstrated through relevant postgraduate studies/qualifications and experience.
  • Management qualification or evidence of management training and experience.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and willingness to pursue additional qualifications pertinent to the role and laboratory operations.
  • Demonstrated dedication to personal Continued Professional Development (CPD).
