Team Leader in Biomedical Science Operations

Position Overview

Our advanced laboratories specialize in extensive blood grouping and screening for microbiological indicators utilizing cutting-edge automated technology. Every donation undergoes thorough screening for atypical antibodies, with a selection also being typed for various antigens to cater to patients requiring specific antigen-negative blood.

We are seeking a Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) possessing specialized expertise in diagnostic and testing laboratory operations. A recognized qualification in Transfusion or Transplantation Science is essential. The successful candidate will be adept at performing, analyzing, and interpreting both routine and intricate testing or diagnostic assessments. This senior Biomedical Scientist role entails overseeing a team of BMS personnel and providing technical guidance within the department. You will serve as a mentor, positively impacting the team while fulfilling the responsibilities of a day-to-day front-line manager.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will be expected to:

  • Conduct, analyze, interpret, document, and report both routine and complex testing investigations.
  • Oversee the daily operations of one or more laboratory teams, ensuring the quality of work and accuracy of results.
  • Provide technical leadership and significantly contribute to the quality management of your designated section.
  • Train and mentor Healthcare Scientist staff.
  • Assume some responsibilities of the Laboratory Manager during their absence and support the training of all laboratory personnel.

Weekend and Bank Holiday work may be required during operational challenges, with appropriate prior notice.

Candidate Profile

Experience and Expertise

  • Extensive background in a diagnostic/testing laboratory with comprehensive knowledge of Transfusion science.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant policies, standards, and guidelines, including Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology/UKAS Accreditation, and BCSH guidelines.
  • Proven experience in training and mentoring staff.
  • Proficient in Information Technology, particularly with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • MSc or equivalent relevant experience equivalent to Master’s level OR
  • Higher specialist knowledge validated by examination from a professional body or demonstrated through relevant postgraduate study/qualifications and experience.
  • Management qualification or evidence of management training and experience.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and development, with a willingness to pursue additional qualifications pertinent to the role and laboratory operations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal Continued Professional Development (CPD).
