About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to undertake the role of Biomedical Scientist Advanced Specialist at NHS Blood and Transplant. The successful candidate will need specialized transfusion knowledge to perform, analyze, interpret, document, and report specialist/complex investigations in the RCI laboratory.

Main Responsibilities
  • Expertise in transfusion/transplantation science, undertaking a range of scientific procedures using specialist scientific knowledge, performing automated and/or manual investigations.
  • Analysis, interpretation, validation, transmission, and reporting of results of routine and complex investigations, working at the level of responsibility and conduct required of a registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Providing specialist advice to the centre, clusters of centres, and hospitals in the region in own area of expertise and providing specialist training to new members of the team, acting as mentor to less experienced staff.
  • Responsible for the daily allocation of workload and supervision of staff in the department, working to ensure high standards and meeting regulatory and quality requirements to ensure patient safety is the main focus of all work performed.
  • Participation in shift rota and on-call rotas and providing cover during operational emergencies.
Requirements
  • In-depth knowledge of Transfusion/Transplantation science.
  • High level of expertise in relevant transfusion specialism, ideally demonstrated by publications.
  • High level of proficiency in relevant specialized laboratory techniques/environments.
  • Experience of setting targets and performance review.
  • In-depth knowledge and evidence of application of the standards of Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology Accreditation UKBTS, and BCSH and other relevant or statutory guidelines.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • In-depth understanding of NHSBT and wider healthcare community.
  • Extensive experience in working in a diagnostic/testing laboratory.
  • Evidence of involvement in research and development projects.
Qualifications and Training
  • MSc or equivalent in transfusion/transplantation or relevant science or equivalent specialist knowledge gained by examination of a professional body e.g. FIBMS or Diploma from BBTS or BSHI.
  • To have completed a formal postgraduate training program together with in-service experience or alternative in-service experience.
  • Member of a professional body e.g. British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS)/British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (BSHI).
  • Basic management qualification or short courses.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and evidence of own Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Requirement for HPC professional registration required (which must be maintained in the role).
