Biomedical Scientist Trainee

NHS Blood and Transplant is a leading healthcare organization that plays a critical role in the NHS, collecting and processing millions of blood donations annually. Our team of Healthcare Scientists provides essential support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing, and issuing blood and its components, as well as delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services related to blood and stem cell transfusions, transplantation, and tissue banking.
This role offers opportunities for career advancement, with the potential to progress to managing a laboratory section or taking on a consultant lead position with responsibility for the entire laboratory service. You may also specialize in areas such as Quality Control, training and education, or research and development.
Key Responsibilities- Analyze, interpret, validate, and report the results of specialist Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics investigations.
- Perform molecular and serological testing related to solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplant and immunogenetic services.
- Assist with quality management issues within the laboratory, under the direction of the Clinical Scientists Section Head and Laboratory Operations Manager.
- Contribute to the coordination and supervision of scientific and support staff.
- Experience in laboratory equipment and techniques.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint).
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
- Health Professions Council registered Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained for this role).
- Good understanding of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS), and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines.
- Evidence of completing a structured training program in Transfusion and Transplantation Science.
