Position Overview

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) plays a vital role within the NHS, responsible for the collection and processing of millions of blood donations annually. Our team of Healthcare Scientists is essential in supporting NHS Hospitals by processing, testing, and issuing blood and its components, as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic services related to blood transfusion, stem cell transplantation, and tissue banking.

The IBGRL Red Cell Reference department is recognized globally for its immunohaematology reference services, catering to both NHS Blood and Transplant and the international transfusion community. We specialize in addressing complex red cell immunohaematology challenges, often involving rare blood types. Our team is distinguished by its scientific expertise and an unparalleled collection of rare cells and sera. Collaborating with international colleagues, the RCR laboratory continues to make significant advancements in the field of human blood groups, including the maintenance of the International Rare Donor Panel.

As an HCPC registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist with substantial post-registration experience, you will possess a specialist qualification in Transfusion/Transplantation Science. We welcome applications from Biomedical Scientists eager to develop specialized transfusion skills, who will initially be appointed at Band 5 while gaining the necessary experience and qualifications. Our priority is to recruit a Specialist Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Band 6.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct, analyze, document, and interpret a diverse range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures related to patient test results for organ transplantation and blood transfusion, supported by the team.
  • Provide support and training to new and less experienced team members.
  • Handle blood and tissue samples while operating various laboratory analyzers and equipment.
  • Be prepared to work flexible hours, including weekends and bank holidays, as per departmental roster requirements.

Candidate Profile

Experience and Expertise

  • Proficient in using a variety of laboratory analyzers and equipment (Band 5).
  • Experienced in a range of scientific techniques (Band 5).
  • Comprehensive scientific knowledge with specialized expertise in transfusion/transplantation science, gained through previous roles as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Band 6).
  • Skilled in specialized laboratory techniques utilizing complex equipment (Band 6).
  • Experience in prioritizing tasks and overseeing the work of other staff to ensure deadlines are met (Band 6).
  • Familiarity with UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS), and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines (Band 6).
  • Proficient in Information Technology.
  • Experienced in report writing, preparing and delivering presentations, and mentoring staff (Band 6).

Qualifications and Training

  • HCPC registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Science graduate with relevant postgraduate training, such as the British Blood Transfusion Society specialist certificate or the British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Diploma, or equivalent experience (Band 6).
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Willingness to pursue further training and development opportunities.
