Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Pulmonary Rehabilitation Assistant to join the Greenwich Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) team, based at 151 Goldie Leigh, Abbey Wood for6 months to cover an existing post going on maternity leave.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in an innovative COPD service which is an established community team managing patients with chronic lung disease under the care of Greenwich GP's. The COPD team consists of a mixture of physiotherapists, matrons, an oxygen specialist, a dietitian, a clinical psychologist and support staff.

Previous experience in the health or fitness setting is required. It is also necessary to be comfortable working alone and also working alongside the larger team.

The Pulmonary Rehab assistant works closely alongside respiratory physiotherapists in the delivery of pulmonary rehab in the community.

Main duties of the job

PR is delivered in two community venues in Plumstead and Eltham. The post-holder will be responsible for independently organising the flow of patients through the Pulmonary Rehab programmes, ensuring the smooth running of the service.

The successful candidate would be expected to support the assessment of suitable patients who will be attending Pulmonary Rehab.

They will help to deliver the classes, and manage the administration of the PR service which includes accurate clinical record keeping, appointment booking and entry onto the NRAP (national respiratory audit programme).

You will have the opportunity to have your own caseload of patients.

Job responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the physiotherapist, to carry a caseload of clients, taking responsibility for implementing and reinforcing treatment programmes using a range of physiotherapy techniques. To participate in the assessment of clients including:Information gathering through liaison with clients, carers and the MDT; performing field walking tests such as the ISWT (incremental shuttle walk test) and the 6MWT (6 minute walk test-the collation of outcome data with the use of standardised outcome measures collaborative goal setting; signposting; assessing change from baseline assessment on reassessment. To prescribe walking aids and other single use clinical equipment as delegated by qualified clinician. This will include assessment and keeping accurate records of the walking aid prescription. To assess the patients ability to use an inhaler effectively and correct technique as needed. To be able to recognise change in the condition of a patient, and document the patient response/reaction to any treatment undertaken including monitoring of heart rate and oxygen levels. To assist the healthcare professional with group treatments/exercise classes or independently supervise routine classes and adjust exercises according to patients health status on that day. To organise own delegated work tasks and activities being flexible to the needs of the service as indicated by the physiotherapist. To implement the treatment of adults with chronic lung as delegated by the physiotherapist, assessing progress and making minor alterations as required. To work, at times without direct supervision or presence of a Physiotherapist, and report back progress or problems to the Physiotherapist. To treat clients individually or in a group, in a variety of settings patients homes, clinics, community and leisure centres. To undertake skilled support work. This will include planning and implementing pulmonary rehabilitation sessions without the presence of a physiotherapist. To instruct clients and carers, providing direction and guidance on a range of exercises as part of their own clinical work or as directed by the physiotherapist. To use empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills, to support clients and carers in implementing Physiotherapy advice and management programmes. Person Specification
