Job summary

Requiredto fill this replacement post within the Paediatric Haematology Department atthe Leeds General Infirmary.

TheLeeds paediatric haematology department has approximately 250 patients underthe care of the paediatric specialist hemoglobinopathy treatment centre, witheither sickle cell disease or thalassemia. There is currently one consultantoverseeing the care of these patients and the appointee would join him tosupport the haemoglobinopathy team and develop the service in line with theNational Service Specification. The overall aim of the service is to reducelevels of morbidity and mortality and improve the experience of allhaemoglobinopathy patients by reducing inequities and improving timely accessto high quality expert care.

Inaddition, we are looking for a colleague who may wish to lead the haemophiliaservice in the future to work alongside the existing haematologist and toparticipate in the joint adult and paediatric telephone advice on call servicefor the Leeds Childrens Hospitals Inherited Bleeding Disorder Service whichsupports approximately 250 patients.

Theappointee will also participate in the clinic providing care to children andyoung people with bone marrow failure disorders.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicant should possess MB BS (or equivalent) FRCPath or equivalentqualification and MRCP or MRCPCH or equivalent and should be included on the SpecialistRegister or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currentlywithin a training programme within the UK.In accordancewith the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctorsmust be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should haveestablished skills in Paediatric Non-Malignant Haematology and its relatedspecialties including haemostasis and thrombosis, Leukaemia and Stem CellTransplantation. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teachingand a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

In relation to this post,we are looking for an enthusiastic paediatric haematologist to join the currentlead consultant in non-malignant haematology to serve an increasing populationof children with haematological disorders including thalassaemia andhaemoglobinopathies, disorders of thrombosis and haemostasis and bone marrowfailure.

2. OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

The Leeds paediatric haematology department hasapproximately 250 patients under the care of the paediatric specialisthemoglobinopathy treatment centre, with either sickle cell disease orthalassemia. There is currently one consultant overseeing the care of thesepatients and the appointee would join him to support the haemoglobinopathy teamand develop the service in line with the National Service Specification. Theoverall aim of the service is to reduce levels of morbidity and mortality andimprove the experience of all haemoglobinopathy patients by reducing inequitiesand improving timely access to high quality expert care.

In addition, we are looking for a colleague who may wishto lead the haemophilia service in the future to work alongside the existinghaematologist and to participate in the joint adult and paediatric telephoneadvice on call service for the Leeds Childrens Hospitals Inherited BleedingDisorder Service which supports approximately 250 patients.

The appointee will also participate in the clinic providingcare to children and young people with bone marrow failure disorders.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Paediatric Haematology and Haemato Oncology. Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in Paediatric Non-Malignant Haematology including haemostasis and thrombosis, Leukaemia and Stem Cell Transplantation. Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

Essential

Should have completed a recognised training programme in Paediatric Haematology. Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

*Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice. *Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process

Management & Interpersonal Skills

Essential

Understanding of current issues in the NHS. *Well organised and skilled in good time management. *Effective interpersonal skills. *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.

Attendance at recognised management course.
