Job summary

Norfolk and Norwich University NHS FT sits within the East of England Maternal medicine network (MMN) and is one of two Maternal medicine centers within the East of England Network.

Our busy maternity service provides care for approximately 5000 deliveries per year. On site, we have 32 postnatal beds incorporating 5 transitional care beds, and 13 antenatal Delivery Suite/Triage area has 15 birthing rooms including a birthing pool, 2 obstetric theatres, anaesthetic and recovery rooms that provide a full range of facilities for high dependency care.

We also provide a Maternity Assessment Unit, which offers a resource for women to attend and be reviewed as required. We additionally provide a co-located Midwifery Led Birthing Unit which comprises of 4 birthing rooms, with water birth facilities available.

We are a highly motivated and passionate team that strives to develop and improve care quality and accessibility. Our team consists of a Lead maternal medicine Obstetrician, Obstetric physician, Maternal medicine Consultants and Network Lead maternal medicine midwife as well as support from our administrative assistant.

Within the Centre we operate a Hub and Spoke model, with an aim to keep care as local to the pregnant person as possible, whilst providing the level of expertise and support required. A further key component of the work of the maternal medicine team at the Centre lies in education and training both locally and across the Network.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the maternal medicine team the Band 7 maternal medicine midwife will be responsible for providing midwifery care to pregnant people with pre-existing co-morbidities. As the post holder you will provide direct maternity care to these women in conjunction with the maternal medicine consultant, obstetric physician, and multidisciplinary teams (MDT).

Working in collaboration with the individual and multidisciplinary team you will assess, plan, implement and coordinate their maternity care pathway. Working collaboratively with the other team members you will assist the on-going development of maternal medicine care pathways and frameworks in line with national policies as a key member of the maternal medicine team. The Maternal Medicine (MM) Midwife acts as a key advocate for the patient and as a support to staff and is accountable for the overall provision of excellent, evidence based, woman centered midwifery care.

The MM midwife will contribute to the running of the twice monthly maternal medicine centre MDT network meeting as well as working alongside the wider MDT, including anesthetists and delivery suite staff to provide care for women under the care of the maternal medicine team

The role includes active participation in the weekly maternal medicine clinic in at NNUH, alongside the MDT Maternal medicine team, as well as attendance at the specialist referral clinics for the most complex 'Category C' patients and regional referrals.

Job responsibilities

The role requires close working relationships with the midwifery team and the multidisciplinary Maternal medicine team. To develop and maintain effective communication and collaboration with other specialist practitioners, services and multi-disciplinary teams related to maternal medicine outside of maternity department. The post holder is responsible for ensuring they comply with current good practice informing/updating all members of the multi-disciplinary team, their colleagues, women and appropriate others, of relevant maternal medicine care plans and ongoing changes. The post holder is responsible for ensuring that they clearly communicate with women and birthing persons, support overcoming any barriers in accessibility to care and information, and actively listen to establish an understanding of the needs of the service user acting as their advocate. Support the connection and collaboration of multiple services such as perinatal mental health, specialist services, safeguarding, community care and maternal medicine care in supporting women and birthing persons with complex and multiple health needs. Awareness and connection with additional agencies to that support the health and well-being of women and families including public health services, health visiting services, social care, and housing where socioeconomic inequalities may exist. Support and maintenance of caseload database and oversight of the Maternal medicine caseload for category B and C patients under Norfolk and Norwich hospital and the Maternal medicine Centre. Attend and update relevant diagnostic findings and results at Multidisciplinary review meetings for women and birthing persons under the care of the NNUH Maternal medicine Centre. Providing enhanced care for women who are classed as having highly complex medical conditions that require their care during their pregnancy being led by a maternal medicine centre, termed as Category C.
