This strategic investment includes additional midwifery positions aimed at enhancing the Governance framework, making this an exciting moment to join our dedicated team.
The Quality & Governance Matron will be responsible for steering, coordinating, and providing expert advice on all facets of clinical quality, risk management, and governance protocols across maternity services. The team is well-equipped, and the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the maternity leadership team to ensure that we are effectively integrating insights from incidents and patient feedback into our service improvements.
The role requires the incumbent to assess, define, scope, plan, manage, and execute initiatives related to the quality agenda for maternity services.
We have instituted an Integrated Performance Report that serves as a performance indicator for the service, and we anticipate the need to establish further clear outcome measures to ensure compliance with local and national standards and policies.
We encourage interested candidates to reach out for more information and welcome informal visits to our unit.
Key Responsibilities
The Quality and Governance Matron will:
- Lead, coordinate, and advise on all aspects of clinical quality, risk management, and governance within Maternity services.
- Review, define, scope, plan, manage, and deliver initiatives related to the quality agenda for Maternity and Midwifery services, ensuring systems and processes consistently meet local and national standards.
- Take charge of significant initiatives such as NHS Resolution Maternity Safety Actions (CNST).
- Exhibit exemplary midwifery leadership and serve as a credible role model with extensive clinical expertise and a solid understanding of governance processes.
- Oversee the monitoring of performance and the delivery of outstanding clinical care.
- Lead investigations into serious incidents and potential litigation cases, ensuring timely and thorough investigations and the preparation of preliminary reports.
- Implement, monitor, and enhance the maternity clinical risk management strategy in alignment with the Trust's overarching clinical risk management strategy.
- Guide the Maternity Risk and Governance team, including the Quality Improvement Midwife and Bereavement team, while providing leadership and support for healthcare governance activities within maternity services.

- Support and conduct investigations into incidents, including drafting reports and learning responses.
- Regularly review previously reported incidents and assess action plans to ensure recommendations and learning are implemented.
- Develop action plans to mitigate risks, including identifying resource needs and necessary changes in clinical practice and administrative procedures.
- Maintain a structured program of work to uphold CNST safety standards within Maternity.
- Ensure a robust performance management framework is in place to address all aspects of risk management and clinical governance.
- Manage the Maternity/Obstetric aspects of the Risk register, collaborating with clinical staff to identify risks and conduct risk assessments.
- Monitor Maternity risks and update risk status as necessary.
- Act as a clinical role model, promoting professional standards and collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team.
- Coordinate the Maternity Governance Committee, Maternity Incident Review and Escalation forum, and Labour Ward Forum.
- Be visible and approachable to staff, service users, and the public, fostering open communication and effective assessments of care delivery and risk management.
- Provide support and advice to staff as needed and assist with clinical duties if within their professional scope.
- Engage in extended hour roles as necessary to support the quality agenda across the 24-hour care period.
