SEMH Teaching Assistant – Wilmslow

Teaching Personnel is recruiting for a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join an Ofsted-rated "Good" secondary school in Wilmslow. This full-time position starts in October and runs until the end of the academic year, with the potential for a permanent role based on performance. The role offers a salary of £419.25 to £500 per week.

Role Overview:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students who face social, emotional, and mental health challenges. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), and other support staff to create a positive, nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support: Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them manage their emotions, build resilience, and engage effectively in their learning.

  • Behavior Management: Assist in implementing individual behavior plans, using positive reinforcement strategies to encourage appropriate behavior and de-escalate potential conflicts.

  • Emotional and Social Development: Support students in developing social skills, emotional regulation, and self-confidence. This may involve mentoring, coaching, or delivering specific interventions tailored to individual needs.

  • Classroom Assistance: Work with teachers to modify lesson plans and resources, ensuring that students with SEMH needs can access the curriculum effectively. This includes providing targeted support during lessons and helping to create an inclusive classroom environment.

  • Progress Monitoring: Keep detailed records of student progress, including their emotional and behavioral development. Use this information to help adjust support strategies and communicate effectively with the wider school team.

  • Parental Engagement: Work closely with parents and carers, providing updates on student progress and collaborating on strategies to support students both at school and at home.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with the SENCO, teachers, and external agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting students with SEMH needs. You will be an integral part of the team that ensures all students receive the support they need to succeed.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with young people, particularly those with SEMH needs, is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students and staff.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach, with the ability to remain composed in challenging situations.
  • Knowledge of strategies to support students with SEMH needs, including behavior management techniques and emotional literacy.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a flexible approach to meeting the needs of students.
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people and helping them overcome barriers to their learning and personal development.
