Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and organized Medical Secretary Assistant to join our team at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will provide administrative support to the Medical Secretaries and their Consultant Teams, ensuring the smooth operation of the department.
Main Responsibilities
The Medical Secretary Assistant will be responsible for typing clinical and administrative letters, answering telephone enquiries, and dealing with patient queries. They will also cover the Medical Secretaries during periods of absence and contribute to multi-disciplinary team meeting work.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to have excellent administration/secretarial skills, audio-typing experience/qualifications, and a good understanding of customer relations. They will also need to be able to work effectively in a team, prioritize tasks, and manage their time and workload efficiently.
Benefits
The successful candidate will be offered a range of benefits, including access to the NHS Pension Scheme, 27 days holiday rising to 33 days (depending on NHS Trust service), and a generous relocation package of up to 30% of salary (capped at £18k) to support with relocation expenses for hard to fill positions where relocation would be an expectation to undertake the role fully.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have a GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent), word processing skills - OCR II (or equivalent RSA II), and typing skills OCR II (or equivalent RSA II). They will also need to have a minimum of 6 months secretarial/administrative experience, experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office, and experience of working in a customer-focused environment.
Skills
The successful candidate will need to be a proficient audio typist with the ability to accurately transcribe complex audio tapes and type complicated medical information whilst subject to frequent interruption. They will also need to have effective communication skills, verbal and written, and the ability to cope with distressing and emotional situations with patients, relatives, and staff.
