About the Opportunity

The Met Office is looking for a talented Scientific Programmer to join our team. As a Scientific Programmer, you will have the opportunity to work on exciting projects that combine science and technology to improve weather forecasting and climate prediction.

Responsibilities:

  • You will work with our Ocean Forecast Verification team to develop and support tools that assess and monitor the quality and accuracy of our ocean forecasts.
  • You will contribute to the development and technical support of our ocean post-processing systems, which deliver forecasts to users including the Royal Navy and the RNLI.
  • You will also enhance how we visualise our models to assist monitoring and assessment of forecast performance.

Requirements:

  • Experience of common scientific programming languages/environments such as Python, Linux, Bash, or similar.
  • Good Quality Assurance processes, best practice, and/or software coding standards are essential.

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary of up to £37,776 per annum.
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2,200 per annum.
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years.
