Position Overview

The Lead Nurse for Emergency Services is accountable for the strategic oversight and professional guidance across all sectors of the Emergency Services.

This role demands a proactive and visible leader who acts as a clinical expert, ensuring the consistent provision of exceptional nursing care and service quality.

The individual will be tasked with enhancing the quality of the patient environment and spearheading initiatives that elevate the patient experience.

Additionally, the role involves a significant operational function, focusing on the effective management of patient flow throughout the service.

Key Responsibilities

The Lead Nurse will:

  • Maintain a prominent, accessible, and approachable presence for staff, patients, families, and the community, fostering open communication channels and ensuring high standards of care are met.
  • Oversee the quality of care delivered within the Emergency Services, initiating corrective measures to enhance practices as required.
  • Ensure that clinical initiatives and service enhancements are fully integrated into everyday clinical practice, providing staff with clear guidance and opportunities to engage in the change process.
  • Uphold a strong clinical presence through the 'Clinical Lead of the Day' role, conducting regular quality assurance assessments and departmental rounds.
  • Maintain personal clinical expertise through direct involvement in patient care.
  • Demonstrate ongoing improvements in the standards of clinical nursing care within designated areas of responsibility.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • BSc/1st Degree or equivalent
  • Specialized training and experience relevant to urgent/emergency care, such as emergency nursing courses or acute care for adults
  • Teaching & Assessing Qualification

Desirable

  • Management/leadership experience
  • MSc in a relevant field
  • Advanced assessment training

Experience

Essential

  • Experience at a senior nurse level (Band 7 or above)
  • Experience in emergency care settings
  • Experience in service development and audit
  • Understanding of governance and assurance systems and their application in practice

Desirable

  • Previous management experience
  • Experience in autonomous practice with complex patient groups
  • Experience in service development initiatives
