We are seeking an experienced and motivated Paediatric Emergency Nurse to join our team at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust. As a Senior Staff Nurse in our Children's Emergency Department, you will play a key role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the smooth operation of the department.
Main Responsibilities- Assess children on arrival in the treatment area and prioritize their need for clinical intervention, planning, implementing, and evaluating care regimes to ensure quick and effective flow through the department.
- Supervise junior staff and students in all aspects of care, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills, and resources to carry out delegated tasks.
- Maintain effective communication with nursing, ancillary, medical, and paramedical colleagues to ensure seamless care delivery.
- Ensure the safe administration of medicines in accordance with local policy and NMC guidelines, including Patient Group Directions.
- Contribute to monitoring and maintaining high standards of patient care, assisting in quality care initiatives, and developing an area of clinical interest to improve care services.
- Develop and maintain clinical knowledge and skills, including extended clinical role skills, following appropriate training.
- Ensure safe and effective discharge procedures, liaising with relevant healthcare and support professionals as needed.
- Provide support for children and their families, directing them to relevant services when necessary.
- Identify and report any child protection issues, making referrals to the multidisciplinary team as required.
- Organize your own work and assist junior staff in managing their workload.
- Act as an effective role model, mentor, and preceptor to junior staff and students.
- Ensure nursing procedures and policies are followed, reporting any changes in a child's clinical condition.
- Take charge of a group of children, ensuring their care needs are met.
- Inform the Shift Leader/Lead Nurse of any activity affecting patient care and department flow.
- Maintain awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing, contributing to audits, clinical risk, and quality initiatives.
- Participate in the development and implementation of new initiatives, contributing to the development of nursing practice within the department.
- Report accidents, incidents, and complaints to the Paediatric Lead Nurse or Shift Leader, completing relevant documentation.
- Assist in the investigation of complaints as required.
