Announcement: Facilitating Urban Transformation
4 weeks ago
Status: Upcoming
Funding Partners: Horizon Europe Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) partners
Funding Type: Grant
Total Funding Available: £2,100,000
Maximum Award Amount: £400,000
This funding initiative aims to tackle significant urban challenges as cities strive towards a more sustainable economic model.
Projects must involve an applicant affiliated with a UK research institution that qualifies for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.
Funding is exclusively available for topics related to the '15-minute city' thematic area.
This opportunity has been collaboratively developed with the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) partnership, co-funded by Horizon Europe.
Funding is allocated for a duration of three years.
Please note that this is a preliminary announcement, and details may be subject to change. The funding opportunity will officially open on a specified date, with further information to be provided at that time.
Eligibility CriteriaThe UK component of the transnational project must include an applicant from a UK research organization eligible for UKRI funding. UK applicants can be based at any organization that qualifies for ESRC funding throughout the project duration.
Applicants can be at any academic career stage, but the project team must possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the proposed project.
Joint submissions from multiple UK applicants are permitted, with one designated as the UK National Contact Point (UK project lead) responsible for overseeing the UK project component and ensuring compliance with ESRC and UKRI terms and conditions.
Additional contributors making significant contributions to the project should be identified as co-applicants.
Co-applicants from business, third sector, or government bodies based in the UK may also be included as project co-leads. However, they cannot serve as the UK National Contact Point.
Project Team RequirementsProject teams must consist of partners from at least three different countries participating in the funding opportunity, with a minimum of two being EU member states or associated with Horizon Europe.
Individuals may only serve as the lead for their organization in two applications and can only be the main applicant for one consortium.
All project teams must include at least one urban government authority, either in a funded or unfunded capacity.
Focus AreasThe DUT partnership emphasizes three critical urban sectors and their interconnections, as outlined in its roadmap.
Proposals addressing topics from multiple Transition Pathways are encouraged, but each proposal must select one primary topic for evaluation.
UK funding is limited to UK-led components of proposals addressing topics within the 15-minute City Transition Pathway.
Funding AvailabilityWe aim to support five to seven projects, with up to £2,100,000 available for UK applicants. The full economic cost of the UK portion of the project can reach £400,000, with typical funding covering 80% of the total costs.
Funding may also be available for additional eligible UK collaborators, including other research entities.
Application ProcessApplicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the project implementation requirements and associated costs. It is advisable to start the application process early and consult with the relevant contact points for any eligibility queries.
Submission DeadlinesPre-proposal applications must be submitted by a specified deadline. Full stage proposals will have a subsequent deadline.
Attachments RequiredApplications must include necessary documentation, including a UK expenditure and additional information form, which will be available when the funding opportunity launches.
Proposal Development SupportFor assistance with proposal development, applicants should reach out to their research office well in advance of submission deadlines.
