Announcement: Facilitating Urban Transformation

Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom NERC - the Natural Environment Research Council Full time
Opportunity Overview

Status: Upcoming

Funding Sources: Horizon Europe Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) partners

Funding Type: Grant

Total Funding Available: £2,100,000

Maximum Award Amount: £400,000

This funding initiative aims to tackle significant urban challenges that cities encounter while transitioning towards a more sustainable economy.

Projects must involve an applicant affiliated with a UK research organization that qualifies for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.

Funding is exclusively available for topics related to the '15-minute city' thematic area.

This opportunity has been collaboratively developed with the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) partnership, co-funded by Horizon Europe.

Funding is accessible for a duration of three years.

As this is a pre-announcement, details may be subject to change. Further information will be provided when the funding opportunity officially opens.

Eligibility Criteria

The UK component of the transnational project must include an applicant based at a UK research organization eligible for UKRI funding. UK applicants can be affiliated with any organization eligible for ESRC funding throughout the grant's duration.

Applicants from the UK can be at any academic career stage, but the project team must possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the proposed project.

Joint submissions from multiple UK applicants are permitted, with one designated as the UK National Contact Point (UK project lead) responsible for overseeing the UK project component and ensuring compliance with ESRC and UKRI terms and conditions.

Project Team Requirements

Project teams must consist of partners from at least three different countries participating in the funding opportunity, with a minimum of two countries being EU member states or associated with Horizon Europe.

All project teams must include at least one urban government authority, which can participate in either a funded or unfunded capacity.

Focus Areas

The DUT partnership emphasizes three critical urban sectors and their interconnections, which are outlined in its roadmap. Proposals addressing topics from multiple Transition Pathways are encouraged, but each proposal must select one primary topic that aligns closely with its focus.

UK funding will be available solely for UK-led components of proposals addressing topics within the 15-minute City Transition Pathway.

Funding Availability

We anticipate supporting five to seven projects, with up to £2,100,000 allocated from UKRI for UK applicants. The full economic cost of the UK project component can reach up to £400,000, with typical funding covering 80% of this cost.

Funding is also available for additional eligible UK collaborators, including other research entities such as not-for-profit or public sector organizations.

Proposal Submission

Proposals must adhere to internal institutional deadlines and include required attachments, such as a UK expenditure and additional information form.

The application process will follow a two-stage procedure, beginning with the submission of pre-proposals that include partner descriptions, concise project outlines, and budget indications.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be assessed based on:

  • Excellence – intellectual merit
  • Impact and user engagement
  • Quality and efficiency of project implementation
Support for Proposal Development

For assistance with proposal development, applicants are encouraged to consult their research office for guidance on costings and writing.
