Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom NERC - the Natural Environment Research Council Full time
Opportunity Overview

Status: Upcoming

Funding Body: UK Research and Innovation

Funding Type: Grant

Total Funding Available: £32,500,000

Award Range: £200,000 - £1,200,000

This funding initiative is designed to support innovative and transformative interdisciplinary projects that bridge multiple fields of study, particularly those not typically funded through existing UKRI responsive mode programs.

Successful projects are expected to significantly impact the involved disciplines or foster the emergence of new fields of research.

Eligibility Criteria for Project Leads: Project leads must be affiliated with a UK research organization that qualifies for UKRI research council funding.

The full economic cost (FEC) of your project can reach up to £1.2 million, with UKRI covering 80% of the FEC.

This is a preliminary announcement, and details may be subject to change. The funding opportunity is anticipated to open soon, with institutional limits on the number of applications allowed for this round.

Organizational Eligibility

Eligible organizations include:

  • UK higher education institutions
  • Research council institutes
  • UKRI approved independent research organizations (IROs)
  • Public sector research establishments (PSREs)

For further information, please refer to the relevant guidelines.

Ineligible Organizations

The following entities are not eligible to apply:

  • Research and technology organizations unless specified
  • Non-academic entities, such as businesses and charities, that are not recognized as UKRI approved IROs or PSREs

Current co-funding arrangements through international lead agency agreements with individual research councils do not apply to this funding opportunity.

Eligibility for Individuals and Grant Roles

Applications can be submitted by individuals or teams from a single organization or multiple organizations. The lead organization must submit the application, which will count towards their application limit.

New role types have been introduced for funding opportunities on the UKRI Funding Service. Specific eligibility rules for this scheme can be found in the guidelines.

Individuals may participate in multiple applications, provided they can manage their commitments. However, one individual can only lead one application for this funding round.

International Collaborators

This funding opportunity primarily aims to support interdisciplinary ideas from the UK research community, but international project co-leads may be permitted under certain conditions.

International co-leads must significantly contribute to the project’s design and execution while adhering to the established eligibility criteria.

Project Partners and Subcontractors

A project partner is defined as a third-party entity that contributes to the project. Project partners cannot also be applicants on the project.

Subcontractors are individuals not employed by the grant staff who are contracted to deliver specific tasks within the project.

Intellectual Property and Project Outputs

It is essential to ensure compliance with relevant funding conditions regarding project outputs and intellectual property.

Commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

We are dedicated to promoting equality of opportunity for all applicants and encourage submissions from a diverse range of researchers. We support flexible working arrangements to accommodate personal circumstances.
