Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom NERC - the Natural Environment Research Council Full time
Funding Opportunity Overview

Status: Upcoming

Funding Body: UK Research and Innovation

Funding Type: Grant

Total Funding Available: £32,500,000

Award Range: £200,000 - £1,200,000

This initiative invites applications for funding aimed at innovative or disruptive interdisciplinary concepts that extend beyond conventional boundaries and are not typically supported through existing UKRI responsive mode programs.

Project Eligibility: Projects must be led by individuals affiliated with UK research organizations that qualify for UKRI research council funding.

The total economic cost (FEC) for each project can reach up to £1.2 million over a period of two years, with UKRI covering 80% of the FEC.

Important Note: This is a pre-announcement, and details may be subject to change. Due to high interest in the previous round, institutional limits on application submissions will be implemented for this round.

Eligibility Criteria for Organizations

Eligible organizations include:

  • UK higher education institutions
  • Research council institutes
  • UKRI approved independent research organizations (IROs)
  • Public sector research establishments (PSREs)

For comprehensive details, please refer to the relevant guidelines. If there are any uncertainties, it is advisable to seek guidance from the Interdisciplinary Responsive Mode (IRM) team.

Ineligible Organizations

The following types of organizations are not permitted to apply:

  • Research and technology organizations unless specified
  • Non-academic entities, such as businesses, charities, or other third-sector organizations that are not UKRI approved IROs or PSREs. These entities may participate as project partners.

Current co-funding arrangements via international lead agency agreements with individual research councils do not apply to this funding opportunity.

Eligibility for Individuals and Grant Roles

Applications can be submitted by individuals or teams from a single organization or multiple organizations. For collaborative teams, the lead organization must submit the application, which will count towards their allowed submissions.

UKRI has introduced new role classifications for funding opportunities managed through the UKRI Funding Service.

Individuals may participate in multiple applications, provided they can fulfill all commitments. However, one individual may only serve as the project lead for a single application in this pilot scheme.

International Collaborators

This funding opportunity primarily supports interdisciplinary projects emerging from the UK research community, although international project co-leads may be permitted under specific circumstances.

To qualify as an international project co-lead, an individual must be employed by a research organization outside the UK and contribute significantly to the project's design and execution.

Project Partners and Collaborators

A project partner is defined as a third-party entity that provides specific contributions to the project. Organizations that are applicants cannot also be project partners.

Project partners are expected to contribute to the project delivery, either financially or in kind, and should not seek funding from UKRI unless justified for minor expenses.

Intellectual Property and Project Outputs

All grant recipients must ensure compliance with the Subsidy Control Act 2022 and obtain prior agreement from collaborators regarding project support.

Commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

We are dedicated to fostering equality of opportunity for all applicants and encourage submissions from a diverse array of researchers. We support flexible working arrangements to accommodate personal circumstances.
