Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom NERC - the Natural Environment Research Council Full time
Opportunity Overview

Status: Upcoming

Funding Partners: Kidney Research UK, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Funding Type: Grant

Total Funding Available: £420,000

Award Amount: £35,000

This funding opportunity is designed to assist research teams in transitioning their scientifically promising bioscience concepts, research, and technologies from the laboratory to commercial viability.

The BBSRC ICURe Explore initiative offers financial support, training, and resources to research teams affiliated with:

  • UK universities
  • BBSRC-funded institutes
  • Approved public sector research entities

This particular cohort represents a collaborative pilot effort between BBSRC and medical research organizations, specifically Kidney Research UK and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The program aims to support academic innovators who have previously secured funding from either UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) or partner medical research charities, provided their research aligns with the BBSRC's standard ICURe framework.

Objective: The primary goal of this pilot is to broaden the spectrum of academically validated research concepts, thereby enhancing the bio-innovation potential within the UK.

Eligibility Criteria

The BBSRC ICURe Explore initiative is open to research teams from all UK universities, BBSRC-funded institutes, and approved public sector research organizations.

The research that underpins the bioscience innovations, products, or services proposed for market exploration must build upon prior funding received from BBSRC or other UKRI grants.

Additionally, applications are welcomed from researchers and academic innovators leveraging peer-reviewed research grants awarded by Kidney Research UK and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Team Composition

Teams participating in the BBSRC ICURe Explore initiative should consist of four key members:

1. Entrepreneurial Lead

This role can be filled by any research or technical staff member receiving their salary or stipend from an eligible university, public sector research organization, or institute. This includes:

  • PhD students
  • Technicians
  • Postdoctoral research associates
  • Fellowship and group leader positions

The entrepreneurial lead must commit full-time for the duration of the program and secure approval from their respective institute or organization.

2. Associated Science Advisor

A researcher who provides intellectual support to the entrepreneurial lead throughout the program. This may involve interdisciplinary input from outside the research group.

3. Technology Transfer Representative

An individual from the team, either employed by or contracted to the research organization, who specializes in the commercialization of intellectual assets. Responsibilities include:

  • Attending essential bootcamp sessions
  • Supporting the entrepreneurial lead and team during the program
  • Facilitating ongoing commercialization efforts post-program
4. Business Advisor

A proactive individual from a relevant industry sector who can provide expert guidance and support. Teams are encouraged to identify a business advisor in their application.
