Position Overview
The Metascience Unit
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is establishing a dedicated Metascience Unit in collaboration with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). This initiative aims to enhance the methodologies of funding and conducting scientific research, ultimately benefiting the economy and society of the UK.
Role Summary
This position plays a pivotal role in advancing a significant investment by UKRI in the field of metascience, focusing on the provision of evidence to inform policy-making.
As an integral member of the DSIT/UKRI Metascience Unit, you will oversee the data requirements of the Unit, which includes sourcing and analyzing experimental or historical data. Additionally, you will spearhead the development and coordination of a comprehensive portfolio of metascience research aimed at shaping policy and funding practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborating within the DSIT/UKRI Metascience Unit:
- Leading the identification and fulfillment of data requirements for the Unit in conjunction with UKRI colleagues.
- Conducting and sourcing analyses of experimental or historical data to support the Unit's objectives.
- Providing analytical support across UKRI utilizing various analytical and statistical techniques for metascience initiatives.
- Developing and managing a diverse portfolio of research related to metascience.
- Assisting in the design and execution of applied experiments focused on UKRI funding processes.
Candidate Profile
About You
The ideal candidate will possess a strong quantitative background. This role is open to all analysts with the requisite skills and experience.
Essential Skills
- Proven analytical experience in:
- Data manipulation; generating analyses and effectively communicating findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Data analysis using SQL, R, and/or Python.
- A solid understanding of the research funding landscape and research policy both in the UK and internationally.
- Capability to design, manage, and interpret results from experimental interventions in complex, real-world contexts, and convey findings to decision-makers.
- Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate documentation and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in building and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners at various levels of seniority.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing needs and priorities.
- Strong project management abilities, including experience in multitasking, prioritizing, and effectively managing colleagues to deliver projects.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in research commissioning, investment, or grant/project management, including collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure effective governance and project outcomes.
- Experience in identifying new investment opportunities, engaging collaborators to ensure requirements are understood and incorporated into proposals.
